Chapter 8 Review Questions-Milady's Barbering Textbook

1. The document summarizes chapter 8 review questions about electrical currents and light therapies used in beauty treatments. It defines different types of electrical currents like DC, AC, and electrical safety devices. It also lists and briefly explains electrical modalities like galvanic current, microcurrent, and high-frequency current. Additionally, it describes the differences between visible and invisible light, ultraviolet and infrared light, and their effects on the skin. Finally, it defines light therapy and lists some common light therapy treatments used in the beauty industry.

Alik McIntosh Chapter 8 Review Questions Sept 24,2019

1. Describe two types of electrical current.

DC-Direct current is a constant, even-flowing current that travels in one direction only.

AC-Alternating current is a rapid and interrupted current, flowing first in one direction and
then in the opposite direction, that produces a mechanical action.

2. Explain the differences between a fuse, circuit breaker, and ground fault interrupter.

Fuse-safety device that prevents overheating of electrical wires.

Circuit breaker- a switch that automatically interrupts or shuts off an electric circuit at the
1st indication of an overload.

GFI- an outlet that senses imbalances within an electric circuit.

3. List and briefly define the three electrical modalities covered in this chapter.

Galvanic current- used to create chemical and ionic reactions in the skin.

Microcurrent- used for iontophoresis, firming, toning, and soothing the skin, and can help
to heal inflamed tissue.

Tesla High-Frequency Current- Commonly called a violet ray and used for both scalp and
facial treatments.

4. What does polarity indicate? A negative or positive pole of an electric current.

5. Explain the differences between visible and invisible light rays.

Visible light is light the human eye can see and invisible light is light the human eye cannot
see.

6. Explain the differences between ultraviolet and infrared light rays. Ultraviolet-purple,
infrared-red

7. What conditions can be treated with ultraviolet light rays and what is the recommended
range of distance between the lamp and the skin?

Acne, tinea, seborrhea, and dandruff conditions, 30-36 inches from the skin.

8. Explain the effects of infrared light rays on the skin?

Soothe nerves, warm muscles to relieve pain, increase blood circulation, and increase
sweat and oil gland production.

9. What is light therapy? the application of specific wavelengths of the light spectrum to the
skin.

10. List four light therapy treatments used in the beauty industry.

Lasers, LED’s, Therapeutic Lamps, low-level light, low level laser,
