Internet Essentials
Internet Essentials is a program by Comcast that offers affordable high-speed internet and
discounted computers for those who need it. They also offer free training and digital literacy
training. They have been able to connect 8 million low-income families and do not require any
contracts or commitment. This program can help close the digital divide gap by offering super
affordable internet and computers to those without access.
White Spaces
Microsoft has come out with a plan to use “white spaces” or unused channels between television
broadcasts to offer broadband internet to those who in is isolated rural areas. These white spaces
use “low-powered television channels to cover long distances and can penetrate obstacles like
concrete walls”. This technology will break barriers of digital divide by allowing those in rural
internet-less communities access to broadband internet.
