Ex 4 7 FSC Part1 M Shahid PDF

The document discusses the nature of roots of quadratic equations. It states that the roots are given by the quadratic formula and depends on the discriminant. There are three cases: 1) If the discriminant is greater than 0, then the roots are real and distinct. 2) If the discriminant is less than 0, then the roots are complex and distinct. 3) If the discriminant is equal to 0, then the roots are real and equal. Several examples are then given to show the nature of roots for different equations based on the value of the discriminant. Methods to determine if roots are rational or irrational are also provided.

Nature of roots of Quadratic Equation
We know that the roots of the quadratic equation are given by the quadratic formula

We see that there are two possible values for , as discriminated by the part of the formula √ .
The nature of roots of the quadratic equation depends on the value of the expression , which is
called its discriminant.
Case I: If then roots will be and , so the roots are real and equal.
Case II: If then roots will be complex and distinct.
Case III: If then roots will be real and distinct. Also if If is a perfect square then
roots will be rational otherwise irrational.

Q#1: Discuss the nature of roots of the following equations.

(i)
Now
Solution:
Roots of equation (1) will be real and equal.
Now Q#2: Show that the roots of the following
equations will be real.
Roots of equation (1) will be real and (i) ( )
distinct, also is not a perfect
square so roots will be irrational. Solution: ( )
Equation (1) can be written as
(ii)
( )
Solution:

Now Now

Roots of equation (1) will be real and

distinct, also is a perfect square so
roots will be rational.
Now as we know that
(iii)

Solution:

Now Roots of (1) will be real.

(ii)
Roots of equation (1) will be real and
distinct, also is not a perfect Solution:
square so roots will be irrational.

(iv) Now
