E Sampler Discussion 1

Particulate matter comes from various sources like factories, vehicles, burning, and agriculture. An experiment measured PM10 levels at the entrance of a university campus during hazy and hot weather. The maximum PM10 concentration was 181μg/m3, higher than the Malaysian guideline of 150μg/m3. Higher concentrations occurred in the morning likely due to more particulate matter in the hazy air. The experiment could be improved by taking samples over multiple days and locations to get a more accurate average concentration.

0 DISCUSSION

Particulate matter comes from diverse sources such as factory and utility smokestacks,
vehicle exhaust, wood burning, mining, construction activity, and agriculture. The
effects of particulate matter to human health are depending on its concentration, the
existence of others pollutant and time of exposure.

This experiment was carried out at the entrance of the University Tun Hussein Onn
Malaysia campus Pagoh where the e-sampler is exposed to get natural air flow for more
accurate results. The weather when the experiment executed was hot with haze
phenomenon which was almost visible for naked eyes. However, the result shows
maximum concentration pm10 of 181µg/m³ which is higher than 150 µg/m³ based on
the standard that provided in Malaysian Ambient Air Quality Guidelines. Referring to
Malaysia Air Pollution Index (API) it considered unhealthy and people will start to have
health effects if exposed to the air for a long time.

Table….shows New Malaysia Ambient Air Quality Standard.

The mass of the filter paper after 24 hours was increased as the concentration PM10
from E-Sampler was compared with data taken from the filter paper. This is because of
the suspended particulate matter appeared in the air. The air flow was 2LPM where an
internal rotary vane pump draws air at 2 LPM into the sensing chamber and it passes
through visible laser light.

Based on the results, the concentration varies per hour. The highest concentration was
181μg/m³ at 11am (21/09/2019) in the morning might be due to the content of the hazy
air with more particulate matters. The lowest concentration is 52μg/m³ at 11pm
(21/09/2019) probably due to the foggy or the higher moisture content particles in the
air which traps the particulate matters and the concentration rises back again
throughout the morning as the temperature increase.

Recommendation to get better results is as follows:

i. If it is possible, take samples for few days or take samples from different places
each after 24 hours and calculate the average concentration of particulate
matters to get more accurate results.
