Course Description:

Philippine Popular Culture is a three-unit course that develops students’ ability to appreciate, analyze, and critic popular culture in the Philippines. This
course equips students with critical perspectives in understanding popular culture in the Philippines and provides students with the necessary tools of
analysis in exploring our popular culture.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

Knowledge
1. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of popular culture and its political, economic and social context.
2. Define and demonstrate the characteristics of popular culture.
3. Explain and evaluate the different forms of Philippine popular culture.
4. Situate Philippine popular culture in global context.

Skills
1. Analyze how popular culture affects the social, economic and political context.
2. Create their own cultural presentation as a way to explore specific social, political and economic issues.
3. Explain how popular culture produces from the opportunities and demands of mass audiences, markets and mass media and their social, economic
and political context.

Values
1. Deepen their sensitivity to self, community, and society
2. Discover and deepen their identity in relation to Philippine popular culture.
3. Develop appreciation for the popular culture in the Philippines and its role and importance in the society

Present a cultural production based on recent issues in society combining popular art, music and literature Prior to the performance, concept
