A. Meaning Of Adverbial Clause

Adverb is a word that gives a description of the place1 (Ananda, English book,
Medan,2016, hlm.38-39) Than Clause is a group of word that contains a subject and verb

“Adverb adalah sebuah kata yang memberikan gambaran dari suatu tempat sedangkan
clause adalah gabungan dari kata ”

Adverbial Clauses is a dependent clauses that functions as an adverb in provide


information about the verb, adjective or another adverb in independent clause in a
complex sentences. (Adverbial Clause adalah dependent clause yang berfungsi sebagai
kata keterangan, dan memberikan informasi tentang verb, adjective atau adverb lainnya
dalam independent clauses untuk menjadi sebuah kalimat )3.(Betty Schrampfer

B. Types of Adverbial Clauses


There’s eight types of adverbial clauses:
1. Adverbial Clause of time
(when,before,after,since,while,as,as long as,until)
Function is say when something happens by reffering to be a period or point
of time, or to another event.
2. Condition
(if,unless,lest)

Function is talk about possible or counterfactual situation and its
consequences.
3. Purpose
Function is indicate the purpose of an action.

4. Reason
Function is indicate the reason for something.
5. Concession
Function is make the statement on of whih contrast with the other or makes it
seem surprising.
6. Place
Function is talk about the location or position of something.
7. Manner
Function is talk about someone behavior on the way something is done.
8. Result
Function is indicate the result of an act or event.
C. Adverb of future and past time

Example : She came to my house before my mother came


Pattern : S + Verb2 + A.C + O/C
Example : When he did not come last night, he notified by phone
Pattern : A.C + S + didn’t + Verb + O/C
Example : He will go to library after he is lunch
Pattern : S + Will + Verb + A.C + O/C

Unless= if.....not

kalimat yang menggunakan unless tersebut berbentuk positif, tetapi jika diganti
dengan if maka kalimatnya berbentuk negatif.
Example : You can’t travel abroad if you don’t have a passport
= You can’t travel abroad unless you do have a passport

D. Conclusion

Adverb as one of the words spoken ( Parts of Speech ) in the order of English
(grammar) is one of the many things that should be known in learning English .
Adverb is a word that describes verbs , adjectives and other words unless noun and
pronoun. There are various forms of adverb which are categorized by function or use.
By knowing the adverb , good shape , meaning and application is expected to be one
of the capital in learning English well and properly .
