POSITION PAPER: “FILIPINO SUBJECT MUST BE
TERMINATED IN TERTIARY LEVEL”
Clamor, Shane Yvonne B.
Grade 11- Narra Topic: Removing of Filipino subject in collegiate levels. Country: Philippines We all know that Filipino is the national language in the Philippines and it is necessary for us, Filipinos, to have enough knowledge about our own national language. It embodies the culture we have as Filipinos and is our only way to understand our fellow Filipinos who uses different dialects they have. It has been a great talk about the issue of eradicating the Filipino subject in collegiate level in the past few years. Removing Filipino subject means removing less improvement for our own national language because it is part of our identity as Filipino citizens and such we should strive to preserve and strengthen this at all times. Removing Filipino subject in tertiary level is not just a moral issue but it goes against our country and the integrity of our race. Filipino is an important part of our daily lives as we use it to communicate towards other people. Lack of importance of Filipino language can now be seen among the youth who lacks grasp on the native language. Many educators and senators are against the issue to exclude Filipino subject in tertiary level because it violates our Constitution. Article XIV Sec. 6 of the Constitution states that “the Government shall take steps to initiate and sustain the use of official communication and as language of instruction in the educational system.” Mindanao State University conduct a research about the issue and their faculty and students were their respondents. The study shows that ninety percent of the respondents agreed that excluding Filipino subject is detrimental to the quality of tertiary-level education while ten percent disagreed to this statement. This implies that most of the respondents believe that Filipino is essential to be taught in college. Filipino subject in elementary and high school is not enough for all the students to learn how to use Filipino language. In fact, there are some high school students who does have a hard time to read Filipino language. Based on research, 36.50 % of the 27,199 students have a hard time reading Filipino context. Taking a Filipino subject in college can really help students to improve their knowledge not just in speaking, reading and writing in Filipino, but also to know the culture and belief behind our national language, Filipino. Our language binds us together, let us share our thoughts with other people and most especially it is our identity as Filipinos. Our knowledge with Filipino language is not yet enough. We must continue to preserve and improve our national language so that our next generations would able know the things behind “Filipino”, our culture, history, and how our great heroes fight to have our own national language.
