Technical Learning For MEP Engineer

The document discusses several topics related to technical learnings for MEP engineers: 1. Dry type transformers have higher no-load losses than oil-filled transformers due to using larger coils and operating at higher temperatures with natural air cooling. This results in a shorter lifespan of 15-25 years for dry type transformers compared to 25-35 years for liquid type transformers. 2. Modern trends for MEP engineers include designing near zero and zero energy buildings, using value engineering to optimize designs and costs, incorporating pre-fabrication, 3D and 5D BIM modeling, automation on construction sites, and integrating mobile technology. 3. Project cost estimation involves breaking down the scope of work, assigning unit costs

TECHNICAL LEARNINGS.

1.Dry type has more no-load loss.

Dry-type transformers require an insulating system that promotes air circulation to
keep it cool. Because of this, the units are bigger and use larger coils than oil-filled models
(with the same voltage/capacity ratings). Furthermore, dry-type variants use more materials,
resulting in higher costs. When it comes to performance, the power distribution units operate
at higher temperatures, since natural cooling mechanisms are not always constant and can
easily be affected by the surrounding environment. These drawbacks result in a shorter
lifespan (15 to 25 years for dry-type transformers, compared to 25 to 35 years for
liquid-type models).

Zero Energy Emission Buildings

MEP Engineers have already started designing near zero and even zero energy buildings.
These buildings would consume only that much net renewable energy in a year as much at it can
produce. The trend that started in Europe is seen to be strongly used in the UAE and other countries.

Value Engineering

Value Engineers are hired to determine whether a certain product gives the value of the cost
invested in it. If not, the product is immediately replaced by another that functions better for the
requirements. Demand for value engineers is expected to rise in 2018.

Pre-Fabrication

Pre-fabrication has helped the speed of the construction largely as whole parts of the
project are built in an altogether different place and transported later at the final site. The one
drawback of this method is that it can only be achieved in areas with advanced transportation
services.

3D and 5D BIM Modelling

Advancement in technology has helped BIM Modelling to a great extent. Nowadays, experts
prefer 3D Models over the traditional 2D Models. 3D Models give a far better approach towards how
the Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical arrangements are going to take place in a design.

5D modelling is another advancement over the 3D Model, wherein, the owner and the
project stakeholders get an estimate of the actual working of the project with respect to information
and cost in a visually communicative way.

2018 expects to see greater use of these technologies than ever before. MEP consultants in
Dubai will be able to utilize the projected thermal maps and emission footprints for a project to
come up with the most optimum building design in compliance with the Al SAFAT regulations.

Automation on Construction Sites

Construction has reached a whole new level of precision and perfection as unmanned robots
replace the tedious human labour. In cities blessed with advanced technology in the fields of
robotics and artificial intelligence, even supervisory robots have been installed. Simple construction
machines include brick laying machines and stone work machines.

Integrating Mobile Technology

Cell phones have helped the speed and precision of reporting on construction sites greatly.
Supervisors need not keep going here and there all the time as the same work can be achieved
remotely through phones.

Completing the Feedback Loop

A lot of potentially sustainable projects were undertaken in 2017. However, 2018 will see
how they turn out. The New Year would give a complete idea whether the feedback of the users and
owners is positive enough. This feedback would help determine future projects and the process of
maintenance and installation of the projects and other things.

In addition, the current trend is to harmonize the design process, with the contractors,
consultants, and architects working in tandem to provide the best building design. As a result, the
problems arising due to incomplete information transfer are expected to be largely eliminated.

The Project Cost Estimation Process

To reach a project cost estimate, MEP engineers must first know the scope of work.
Using the scope as a starting point, the traditional approach to reach a cost estimate is
the following:
 The project scope is broken down by areas, such as mechanical, electrical and
plumbing. In project management, this is called a Work Breakdown Structure
(WBS).
 Each building system is further divided into cost items, with measurable
quantities of materials and labor. Many tasks in construction also include
equipment costs.
 Based on local prices, MEP engineers can assign a unit cost to each item.
 Each unit price is multiplied by the corresponding quantity of work, and the sum
of all items yields the cost estimate for the project.
While the basic procedure for cost estimation is simple, it can consume plenty of time,
especially in large projects. Modern engineering firms use powerful tools that simplify
drafting and cost estimation, and MEP engineers can focus on making the best technical
decisions.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a design tool that greatly simplifies the cost
estimation procedure. MEP engineers can create a digital model of all building systems,
and then assign material properties to components. Material take off can require several
days with a manual procedure, but modern software can perform calculations within
seconds.
Consider that project cost estimation requires technical knowledge and experience,
even with modern design tools. There is a common misconception that advanced
software displaces engineering services, but software only provides useful results if the
inputs and design parameters are correct. Most projects also involve decisions between
different types of equipment or system layouts, and only qualified engineers can choose
an optimal configuration.

Project Cost Optimization: Going One Step

Further
When you work with the best MEP engineers, they go beyond a simple cost estimate,
proposing ways to reach the same final result with lower costs. For example, many
buildings have oversized installations that are more expensive and more demanding in
maintenance; a qualified MEP engineering firm will make sure you install the optimal
capacity for your building.
MEP engineers may also suggest modifications that increase some upfront costs, but
offering long-term savings that are much higher. LED lighting is a good example: it is
slightly more expensive than conventional lamps and luminaires, but it reduces lighting
expenses by over 70% in some cases.
While the project cost estimate is important, developers should also consider the total
cost of ownership over the building’s service life. Cost savings can often be achieved
without sacrificing performance, and some projects can achieve lower cost and higher
performance at once with smart decisions. On the other hand, cost savings at the
expense of performance should be avoided, since extra costs in the long run may be
several times higher than the initial savings.
