Methodology Exp 3

The document outlines the start-up procedures and methodology for two experiments measuring water density with and without heating. The start-up involves filling and preparing Tank T2 with water and setting controls. Experiment 1 measures density without heating by circulating water between tanks and recording readings. Experiment 2 repeats this process but first heats the water to 50°C before taking readings. Both experiments take readings with the tank open and closed to air. The document concludes with plant shut-down procedures.

METHODOLOGY

START-UP PROCEDURES:

1. Tank T2 was filled up with water. The drain valve is fully open.
2. The main power supply switched on.
3. Heater and pump were off
4. Pump suction valve and all discharge valve were fully opened.
5. By-pass valve (BV) was opened by one turn before starting the pump. BV was fully
closed after the pump started.
6. AFR was set to 30psig.
7. Make sure the top vent (V) and overflow valve were fully open at tank T1.

EXPERIMENT 1: Density Measurement (Water, Heater OFF):

1. Start the pump and stirrer

2. The rising level in tank T1 was observed until it overflows.
3. Manual discharge globe valve was shut at the tank T1.
4. Stop the pump and stirrer.
5. RUN 1:
a) Read the Specific Gravity of water in tank T2 when the water already stabilizes
using the hydrometer.
b) Three (3) consecutive set of reading were taken from density indicator (DI) and
actual temperature in tank T1 from temperature gauge (TG).
c) Data was recorded.
6. RUN 2:
a) Tank T1 was set to close tank.
b) The overflow valve and vent were fully shut.
c) Bottom gate and globe valve were fully shut.
d) Turn the air inlet manual isolation valve and let the air flow into top space of
tank T1.
e) Three (3) consecutive set of reading were taken from density indicator (DI) and
actual temperature in tank T1 from temperature gauge (TG).
f) Data was recorded.
7. Tank T1 was set back to open tank.
EXPERIMENT 2: Density Measurement (Water, Heater On)

1. Start the pump.

2. Water level was observed in tank T1 until it overflows.
3. Heaters switched on.
4. Let the water circulate throughout tank T1 and the Tank T2 until it reaches around 50C.
5. Manual discharge globe valve at tank T1 was shut.
6. Heaters switched off.
7. Stop the pump and stirrer.
8. RUN 1:
a) Read the Specific Gravity of water in tank T2 when the water already stabilizes
using the hydrometer.
b) Three (3) consecutive set of reading were taken from density indicator (DI) and
actual temperature in tank T1 from temperature gauge (TG).
c) Data was recorded.
9. RUN 2:
a) Tank T1 was set to close tank.
b) The overflow valve and vent were fully shut.
c) Bottom gate and globe valve were fully shut.
d) Turn the air inlet manual isolation valve and let the air flow into top space of
tank T1.
e) Three (3) consecutive set of reading were taken from density indicator (DI) and
actual temperature in tank T1 from temperature gauge (TG).
f) Data was recorded.
10. Tank T1 was set back to open tank.
11. All water in tank T1 was drained out by opening the manual discharge valve.
12. Cool down the heater elements in tank T2 before continuing with next experiment.
PLANT SHUT-DOWN

1. Make sure heaters and pump are switched OFF.

2. Turn OFF the stirrer.

3. Make sure air inlet isolation valve is 90 to the air supply inlet tubing.

4. Fully open top vent and overflow valve.

5. Drain out all water in tank T2 by opening manual drain valve.

6. Switch OFF the main power.
