The 2019 Definition of the Mole

The mole, symbol mol, is the SI unit of amount of
substance. One mole contains exactly 6.02214076×1023
elementary entities. This number is the fixed numerical
value of the Avogadro constant, NA, when expressed in
the unit mol−1 and is called the Avogadro number.

The amount of substance, symbol n, of a system is a

measure of the number of specified elementary entities.
An elementary entity may be an atom, a molecule, an
ion, an electron, any other particle or specified group of
particles.
Chemical Formulas

Chemical Formulas
• Chemical Formula –representation of the
combination of elements forming compounds
• Shows the kind and number of elements combined and
the whole-number ratio of atoms present
• Empirical formula –the smallest whole-number
ratio of atoms present
• Molecular formula –indicates the actual numbers
of atoms present in a molecule of the compound
• Structural formula –shows the relative placement
and connection of atoms in the molecule
Chemical Formulas
To get the empirical formula
1. Get the moles of each element
• When using percent composition, convert first to grams
by assuming a mass (100g is convenient)
• You may obtain the moles of each element from
compound products
2. Divide all results by the smallest number of moles
• This will give the smallest ratio’s
3. If there are fractional ratios, multiply each ratio
by integers to get whole numbers
