ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

By Cecil Frances Alexander

All things bright and beautiful

All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens

Each little bird that sings
He made their glowing colors
He made their tiny wings.

The purple- headed mountain

The river running by
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.

1
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden
He made them every one.

The tall trees in the greenwood

The meadows where we play
The rustles by the winter
We gather every day.

He gave us eyes to see them

And lips that we might tell’
How great is God Almighty
Who has made all things well.

THE PHILIPPINE TARSIER

Have you seen a monkey?

The smallest monkey in the world is found in Bohol, Leyte,

Samar, and Mindanao. It is called Philippine tarsier. It has a long tail. Its
tail is longer than its body. Its head is round and small. It has big round
eyes. The ears are large and shaped like a leaf. The brown and gray
fur covering its body is short, thick and soft.

The tarsier sleeps during the day and hunts for food at night.

Example: adjective - word it describes

smallest monkey

Here is another selection for you to read and study. This is a conversation between a mother and
her children. You will learn more about adjectives in this selection.

Mother: I hope Mother comes soon. She told me she will bring home
something from the market.

Allan: I know what it will be – my favorite rice cake.

Mila: Here comes Mother. Mother what do you have for us?

3
Mother: A rice cake. It’s still hot. Here it is. Divide it between the two of you.

Mila: I’m older and bigger than you. I should be the one to divide it.

Allan: But you always get the larger piece.

Mila: I have the right to get the larger piece. I’m older and bigger than
you. My needs are greater than yours.

Mother: What are you talking about?

Allan: I don’t want Mila to divide it.

Mila: But, Mother I’m older than Allan. I should be the one to do it.

Mother: Yes, you are right. Divide it now, Mila.

(Mila divided the cake into two pieces, one piece is bigger)

Mother: Now, Allan since you are the younger one, you have the first
choice.

Allan: That is a good decision, Mother.

Mother: This should teach you, Mila to be fair to your brother all the time.

Mila: I’m sorry Mother.

Answer the questions.

1. Why did Mila think she should be the one to divide the cake?
2. Did Allan agree to have Mila divide the cake? Why?
3. What did Mother decide to do after the cake was divided?
4. Was it a fair decision? Why?
5. What did Mila learn from her mother?

In the second sentence, two objects are compared. This is called the comparative form.

In the third sentence, there are three objects being compared. This is called the
superlative form.

in his life. They would be inviting kids from affluent families to party with him. They
would order the biggest and most expensive cake available in town. They would invite
the finest clowns to give laughter and delights to kids and guests. They would serve
sumptuous and extravagant food during the party.
However, Richard didn’t like the idea of having a luxurious birthday party.
Instead, he requested his parents to open the gate of their mansion to accommodate the
indigent kids in town to dine and celebrate with him on his birthday, where plenty and
nutritious foods would be served; fun-filled games, and durable toys would be given to
poor kids. No other kids would be invited except the poor kids. His parents loved the
idea.
