Application of the Theory of Comfort
NURS 306 – Theoretical Foundations of Professional Nursing Practice
Purpose of Assignment This assignment is designed to allow the student an opportunity to complete an in-depth analysis of a nursing theory/model. Analysis of the theory coupled with application to a clinical scenario is intended to demonstrate the relevance of nursing theories to professional practice. Student Approach to Assignment For my assignment, I chose to discuss the Katherine Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort. For me, this theory is one I practice every day as a labor and delivery nurse. I discussed Kolcaba’s definition of comfort as well we my own definition. I applied the theory to a research study on the use of “quiet time” to help with the healing process as well as applied it to my everyday practice. I use multiple comfort measures to help my patients through their labor and delivery journey. This assignment gave me a better understanding of the Theory of Comfort and reintegrated the importance of giving our patients comfort during all aspects of nursing. I explained that I will continue to utilize the Theory of Comfort in my everyday practice through listening and observation to help better anticipate my patient’s needs. Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio I feel that this project should be included in my portfolio because it was one of my favorite papers to write due to my passion to provide comfort to my labor patients. Also, I feel it was one of my best written papers, I received a grade of 100. It reflects me a nurse because it is my goal to give my labor patients the best possible experience through anticipating their needs and educating them along the way. • Nursing Practice o Performs therapeutic interventions that incorporate principles of quality management and proper safety techniques Example: by applying the Theory of Comfort to my practice, I provide a variety comfort measures to help my patients through their labor and delivery. I do my best to provide pain relief (if desires), relaxation techniques, position changes, breathing techniques, massage, distraction, and provide them with a relaxing environment such as dimming lights, limiting visitors, and with use of essential oils. o Implements nursing care practices as appropriate to provide holistic health care to diverse populations across the lifespan Example: upon taking over care of the patient, I assess if they have any cultural, religious, or ethnical needs that they wish to be provided in their care. In caring for women of various child baring ages, I would be sensitive to their needs, especially young mothers. • Communication o Demonstrates skills in using technology, informatics, and communication devices that support safe nursing practice Example: Upon caring for patients of various cultural and economic background, I would utilize an interpreter or language line as needed. I provide safe practice and comfort to my patients with language barriers by making sure they understand their plan of care and work to utilize their cultural or religious preferences into their care. • Teaching o Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care professionals about health care procedures and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions Example: I educate each patient, based on their learning needs, during the course of their stay. I educate new moms of the labor and delivery process and what to expect. I educate them on the fetal heart rate monitor and what each beeping sound means. I educate them on their pain reliving options and the reason behind any interventions. I work to provide open communication with each patient and their support person. I make sure they know it my goal to provide them comfort, whether it me physically, mentally or emotionally. • Culture o Demonstrates sensitivity to personal and cultural definitions of health, and how these beliefs influence an individual’s reactions to the illness experience and end of life. Example: Upon assuming care of the patient, I assess whether they have any cultural, ethnical or religious needs that I should try to incorporate into their care. I am sensitive to all cultures and recognize that they may have a different outlook on the birthing process. Some may choose to go without epidural or refuse a cesarean delivery. Some may refuse an induction or vaccines to the baby after birth. Above all, I provide comfort and holistic care to each patient.
