LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATIONS

1] DESIGN BASIS -

1. Lightning system shall be designed as per IS/IEC 62305:2010.

2. Lighting Risk factor which is basis for providing protection is evaluated for the buildings a
below given list

AREA Height, Length, Width, M

STG Building 18.5 36 25
Cooling tower 21 39.8 14.5
PH-1 Boiler 58 10.9 6.4
PH-2 Boiler 46.1 12.5 8.7
AQC-1 Boiler 31.5 20.2 8.8
AQC-2 Boiler 32.2 21.2 7.3

3. Self-conducting structures may not be provided with aerial rods and down conductors.
They shall be connected to the earthing system at minimum two points of the base.

4. The acceptable level of tolerable risk RT considered design of Lightning Protection is 10 -5

worst risk level factor for loss of human life or permanent injuries.

5. Since, PH Boiler is below the tallest structure in the plant i.e. Preheater next to it
PH Boiler structures will be protected from existing Cement Plant Lightning
arrester on Preheater.
Considering this, Lightning Protection is considered for STG Building and AQC Boilers.

6. In this calculation, Lighting calculation for STG Buidlign is considered since, STG Building
being comparatively biggest buidling.

7. Below is Summary of Lightning Arresters Qty envisaged for supply as per calculation

2] Lightning Protection Calculations

As per IS/IEC 60305:2010, for this building Loss of human life (L1) and economic loss (L4) are
relevant for this type of structure.

It is required to evaluate the need for protection. This implies the need to determine the risk R1
for loss of human life (L1) with the risk components R A, RB, RU Aand RV and to compare it with th
tolerable risk RT = 10-5 (according to Table 4). The tolerable risk RT for economic loss is 10 -3.
Considering this, the suitable protection measures to mitigate human life risk will inturn mitigat
economical loss as well.

Tolerable R1 > RT: Lightning Protection is requried.

Since risk R1 = 9.9x10-7 is LOWER than tolerable value RT = 1x10-5,

Lightning Protection for PH-2 Building is NOT REQUIRED.

However, still a nominal protection is provided as per IS/IEC 62305 as per agreed specs.

2] Lightning Protection Calculations

As per IS/IEC 60305:2010, for this building Loss of human life (L1) and economic loss (L4) are
relevant for this type of structure.

It is required to evaluate the need for protection. This implies the need to determine the risk R1
for loss of human life (L1) with the risk components R A, RB, RU Aand RV and to compare it with the
tolerable risk RT = 10-5 (according to Table 4). The tolerable risk RT for economic loss is 10 -3.
Considering this, the suitable protection measures to mitigate human life risk will inturn mitigate
economical loss as well.
