 Explore Thai culture
Jim Thompson’s House:

Jim Thompson’s House is a museum in central

Bangkok, Thailand, housing the art collection of American
businessman and architect Jim Thompson, the museum
designer and former owner. Built in 1959, the museum
spans one rectangular "rai" of land (approximately half an
acre or 2023.43 meters). It is one of the most popular
tourist destinations in Thailand; sporting vibrant jungle
foliage in the heart of the city.
Following his moving to Bangkok and the
establishment of the Thai Silk Company Limited in 1948,
Thompson also became a major collector of Southeast
Asian art, which at the time, was not well-known
internationally. Attracted by the subtlety of their
craftsmanship and expression, he built a large collection
of historical Buddhist statues and traditional Thai
paintings made of wood, cloth, and paper that depicted the
life of Buddha and the legend of Vessantara Jataka. He
collected

-7-
secular art not only from Thailand but from Burma,
Cambodia, and Laos, frequently travelling to those
countries on buying trips. His collection also consisted of
white and blue porcelain from China, which made its way
into Thailand around the 16th and 17th centuries.
In 1958, he began what was to be the pinnacle of his
architectural achievement, a new home to live in and to
showcase his art collection. The museum was planned to
consist of a complex combination of six traditional Thai-
styled houses, primarily constructed of wood, and various
old Thai structures that were collected from all parts of
Thailand in the 1950s and 1960s. His home sits on a klong
(canal) across from Bangkrua, where his weavers were
then located. Most of the 19th-century houses were
dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya, but the largest, a
weaver's house (now the living room), came from
Bangkrua.
After Thompson's disappearance in 1967, the house
came under the control of The James H. W. Thompson
Foundation under the royal patronage of H.R.H. Princess
Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Doi Suthep

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a Theravada temple in

Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The temple is often
referred to as "Doi Suthep" although this is actually the
name of the mountain where it's located. It is a sacred site
to many Thai people. The temple is 15 kilometres (9.3 mi)
from the city of Chiang Mai. From the temple, impressive
views of downtown Chiang Mai can be seen.
The original founding of the temple remains a
legend and there are a few varied versions. The temple is
said to have been founded in 1383 when the first stupa was
built. Over time, the temple has expanded, and been made
to look more extravagant with many more holy shrines
added. A road to the temple was first built in 1935.

 City Tour
Wat Pra Keaw:

Wat Phra Kaew is regarded as the most sacred

Buddhist temple (wat) in Thailand. The Emerald Buddha
housed in the temple is a potent religio-political symbol
and the palladium (protective image) of Thai society. It is
located in Phra Nakhon District, the historic centre of
Bangkok, within the precincts of the Grand Palace.
The main building is the central phra ubosot, which
houses the statue of the Emerald Buddha. According to
legend, this Buddha image originated in India where the
sage Nagasena prophesized that the Emerald Buddha
would bring "prosperity and pre-eminence to each country
in which it resides", the Emerald Buddha deified in the
Wat Phra Kaew is therefore deeply revered and venerated
in Thailand as the protector of the country. Historical
records however dates its finding to Chiang Rai in the 15th
century where, after it was relocated a number of times, it
was finally taken to Thailand in the 18th century. It was
enshrined in Bangkok at the Wat Phra Kaew temple in
1782 during the reign of Phutthayotfa Chulalok, King
- 14 -
Rama I (1782–1809). This marked the beginning of the
Chakri Dynasty of Thailand, whose current sovereign is
Vajiralongkorn, King Rama X.
The Emerald Buddha, a dark green statue, is in a
standing form, about 66 centimetres (26 in) tall, carved
from a single jade stone ("emerald" in Thai means deep
green colour and not the specific stone). It is carved in the
meditating posture in the style of the Lanna school of the
northern Thailand. Except for the Thai King and, in his
stead, the Crown Prince, no other persons are allowed to
touch the statue. The King changes the cloak around the
statue three times a year, corresponding to the summer,
winter, and rainy seasons, an important ritual performed to
usher good fortune to the country during each season.

- 15 -
Royal Grand Palace:

The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the

heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the
official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand)
since 1782. The king, his court and his royal government
were based on the grounds of the palace until 1925. King
Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), resided at Chitralada
Royal Villa and his successor Vajiralongkorn at Amphorn
Sathan Residential Hall, both in the Dusit Palace, but the
Grand Palace is still used for official events. Several royal
ceremonies and state functions are held within the walls of
the palace every year. The palace is one of the most
popular tourist attractions in Thailand.
Construction of the palace began on May 6, 1782,
at the order of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I), the
founder of the Chakri Dynasty, when he moved the capital
city from Thonburi to Bangkok. Throughout successive
reigns, many new buildings and structures were added,
especially during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama
V). By 1925, the king, the Royal Family and the

- 16 -
government were no longer permanently settled at the
palace, and had moved to other residences. After the
abolition of absolute monarchy in 1932, all government
agencies completely moved out of the palace.
In shape, the palace complex is roughly rectangular
and has a combined area of 218,400 square metres
(2,351,000 sq ft), surrounded by four walls. It is situated
on the banks of the Chao Phraya River at the heart of the
Rattanakosin Island, today in the Phra Nakhon District.
The Grand Palace is bordered by Sanam Luang and Na
Phra Lan Road to the north, Maharaj Road to the west,
Sanamchai Road to the east and Thai Wang Road to the
south.

Wat Po:

Wat Pho ,also spelt Wat Po, is a Buddhist temple

complex in the Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, Thailand.
It is on Rattanakosin Island, directly south of the Grand
Palace. Known also as the Temple of the Reclining
Buddha, its official name is Wat Phra Chetuphon

- 17 -
Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn: Wat Phra
ChettuphonWimonmangkhlaramRatchaworamahawihan.
The more commonly known name, Wat Pho, is a
contraction of its older name Wat Photaram.
The temple is first on the list of six temples in
Thailand classed as the highest grade of the first-class
royal temples. It is associated with King Rama I who
rebuilt the temple complex on an earlier temple site, and
became his main temple where some of his ashes are
enshrined. The temple was later expanded and extensively
renovated by Rama III. The temple complex houses the
largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand, including
a 46 m long reclining Buddha. The temple is considered
the earliest centre for public education in Thailand, and the
marble illustrations and inscriptions placed in the temple
for public instructions has been recognised by UNESCO
in its Memory of the World Programme. It houses a school
of Thai medicine, and is also known as the birthplace of
traditional Thai massage which is still taught and practiced
at the temple.

Bangkok:
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and, with a
population of over eleven million inhabitants, by far its
largest city. Its high-rise buildings, heavy traffic
congestion, intense heat. It is one of Asia's most
cosmopolitan cities with magnificent temples and palaces,
authentic canals, busy markets and a vibrant nightlife that
has something for everyone.
For years, it was only a small trading post at the
banks of the Chao Phraya River, until King Rama I, the
first monarch of the present Chakri dynasty, turned it into
the capital of Siam in 1782, after the burning of Ayutthaya
by Burmese invaders but they did not take over Ayutthaya.
Since then, Bangkok has turned into a national treasure
house and functions as Thailand's spiritual, cultural,
political, commercial, educational and diplomatic centre.
Bangkok is split up into 50 districts (khet), which
are further split into 154 subdistricts (khwaeng), but these
are more often used in official business and for addresses.
Bangkok is warm at any time of the year with
temperatures over 30°C (86°F). The most pleasant time to
visit is the cool season that lasts from November till
February.
