The document is a periodic table webquest that provides information about different groups of elements. It asks questions about the location of elements, properties of metals and non-metals, and specific groups like alkali metals, halogens, and noble gases. The key points are that elements are organized based on properties, metals are malleable and conduct heat/electricity while non-metals do not, and specific groups have distinctive traits such as number of valence electrons.

Part A: Periodic Table Webquest – Answer Key

Click on the first website listed http://www.chem4kids.com/files/elem_pertable.html

1. Elements are placed in certain locations within the periodic table based on the way they look and
act.
2. A row is also called a period.
3. All of the elements found within a row have the same number of atomic orbitals.
4. The maximum number of shells is seven.
5. Columns are also called groups.
6. The elements within a group have the same number of valence electrons which are involved in
chemical bonding.
7. Each element within group 1 has one valence electron.
8. Helium is different because it can only have two electrons in its outer shell but it is still called a
noble gas because its outer orbit is full.

On the left hand side under Element Groups click Alkali Metals.
9. They are found in group one.
10. They are very reactive metals and do not occur freely in nature. Why do you think this is? They
would react almost instantly with the surrounding substances therefore create new compounds.
11. How many electrons do they lose when bonding and what kinds of bonds do they form? One, Ionic
Bonds.
12. Like most metals they are malleable, ductile and are good conductors of heat and electricity.
13. If exposed to water, alkali metals will explode. Why do they explode? You will need to do additional
research. The hydrogen gas created will combust rapidly.
On the left hand side under Element Groups click Alkaline Earth Metals.
14. These metals are metallic elements. They are also very reactive and not found freely in nature.
Which are more reactive, Alkali or Alkaline Earth Metal? You will need to do additional research.
Alkali Metals.
On the left hand side under Element Groups click Transition Metals.
15. Which properties do they have in common with other metals? Ductile, malleable, and conduct
electricity and heat.
16. What is significantly different between them and other metals? They can have more than 1
oxidative states (number of valence electrons).
On the left hand side under Element Groups click Metalloids.
17. Why are they called metalloids? You may need to do additional research. They exhibit properties
of both metals and non-metals.
On the left hand side under Element Groups click Non-Metals.
18. How are the physical properties of non-metals different from that of metals? They don’t conduct
electricity or heat well. They are brittle, aren’t malleable or ductile.
19. Which of the three main states of matter are non-metals never found in. Liquid.
On the left hand side under Element Groups click Halogens.
20. Halogens have seven valence electrons.
21. Which halogen is found as a liquid at room temperature? Bromine.
On the left hand side under Element Groups click Nobel Gases.
22. Why are noble gases considered to be stable? Explain in your own words and in simple terms. You
may need to do additional research. Their outer orbit is full and therefore they don’t have any
free electrons to create chemical bonds with.
