Math 241, Quiz 5. 9/26/11. Name

The document is a math quiz with 3 problems: 1) Sketch the graph of the function f(x,y)=4x^2 + y^2 + 1, which is a paraboloid that opens up at (0,0,1). 2) Find the limit of xycosy/(3x^2 + y^2) as (x,y) approaches (0,0), which does not exist as the limit approaches along different paths. 3) Find the limit of (x^2 + y^2)/(x^2 + y^2 + 1 - 1) as (x,y) approaches (0,0), which is 2.

Math 241, Quiz 5. 9/26/11.

Name:
• Read problems carefully. Show all work. No notes, calculator, or text.
• There are 15 points total.

1. §14.1, #27 (5 points): Sketch the graph of the function

f (x, y) = 4x2 + y 2 + 1.

Solution: This is a paraboloid that opens up at (0, 0, 1).

2. §14.2, #11 (5 points): Find the limit, if it exists, or show that the limit does not exist.
xy cos y
lim .
(x,y)→(0,0) 3x2 + y 2

Solution: Approach (0, 0) along two curves.

• Along y = 0 (x-axis): For x 6= 0, we have f (x, 0) = 0. Hence, f (x, y) → 0 as

(x, y) → (0, 0) along the x-axis.
x2 cos x 1
• Along y = x: For x 6= 0, we have f (x, x) = 2
= cos x.
4x 4
Hence, f (x, y) → 1/4 as (x, y) → (0, 0) along the line y = x.

Now, since these limits disagree, the limit in question does not exist.
3. §14.2, #17 (5 points): Find the limit, if it exists, or show that the limit does not exist.

x2 + y 2
lim p .
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2 + 1 − 1

Solution: We compute
p
x2 + y 2 x2 + y 2 x2 + y 2 + 1 + 1
lim p = lim p ·p
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2 + 1 − 1 (x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2 + 1 − 1 x2 + y 2 + 1 + 1
p
(x2 + y 2 )( x2 + y 2 + 1 + 1)
= lim
(x,y)→(0,0) x2 + y 2
p
= lim ( x2 + y 2 + 1 + 1) = 2.
(x,y)→(0,0)
