What is the fate of the universe? Will the universe continue to expand?
Or will it eventually continue because of gravity?

The universe began as something incredibly small, and then expanded
quickly. The theory predicted that the universe as a whole must either be expanding or
contracting. If the universe is expanding, it must once have been much smaller than it is now,
this realization led to the Big Bang Theory.
For a universe containing normal “stuff”, such as matter and light, the
answer to this question depends on how much stuff there is. More stuff there is. More stuff
means more gravity, which pulls everything back together and slows the expansion. As long as
the amount of stuff doesn’t go over a critical threshold, the universe will continue to expand
forever, and eventually suffer heat death or freezing out. But if there’s too much stuff, the
expansion of the universe will slow down and stop. Then the universe will begin to contract. A
contracting universe will shrink smaller and smaller, getting hotter and denser, eventually ending
in a fabulously compact inferno, a sort of reverse Big Bang known as the Big Crunch.
“Astronomers believe that the Universe was born in an event they call
the Big Bang, which we can think of as a gigantic explosion. The Big Bang created the Universe
and set it expanding.” (Robin Kerrod, 1996) A long time ago the Universe was tiny, super-hot
and full of energy in the form of radiation. Just seconds later, it had cooled down enough to
allow the basic particles of matter to form and these particles are protons, neutrons and electrons.
Meaning to say, the Universe before is smaller than it is today, so it will be bigger as time goes
by. Here is the big question, what will happen to the Universe in the future? Science says that
there are two probability and it could be one of these probability. It could expand forever until it
runs out of energy or it could eventually stop expanding and start to shrink. Eventually it would
shrink into nothing like it expanded from nothing and there might be another Big Bang that
would create a new Universe.
Will the universe continue to expand? Yes it will because of gravity. "When you pick up
a tennis ball and let it go, what happens? It falls to the ground. When the apple comes loose from
a tree, it falls to the ground. The ground appears to be attracting the ball and the apple in some
way. In fact, it does, the earth has a property called gravity which make it able to attract
everything. Gravity does not stop at ground level it extend above the earth. Through atmosphere
it holds the space shuttle in orbit 300km above the earth" (Robin Kerrod, 1996) what you can’t
see is that the tennis ball and the apple also has a tiny gravitational pull that acts upon the earth.
Gravity always acts to pull matter together. Due to "dark energy", a repulsive force of empty
space that counteracts gravity on large scales. Through dark energy it can accelerate the extended
or expansion of the universe
Therefore, we conclude that, evidence has ruled out the Big Crunch or the Big Bang. The
big chill is probably the least that will happen, Whether or not the universe goes all the way to a
Big Rip depends on the dark energy really is, and whether it will stay constant forever or fade
away as suddenly as it appears to have arisen. So out of three scenarios for the fate of universe—
re-collapse to a Big Crunch, expand ever more slowly to a Big Chill, or expand ever faster to a
Big Rip – we have managed to narrow the possibilities down somewhat. There are plenty of
possibilities and theories that explains the fate of the universe and scientist are still studying to
get a more enhance study about this theory that can further be well-known than the Big Bang
Theory. The universe is one of a kind. Knowing the fate of the universe will be very complex but
this will be the best scientific discovery of human if ever it happens.
