1. The following table gives the distribution of weekly income of 160 families:
Weekly Income No. of Families

2000-4000 20
4000-6000 40
6000-8000 50
8000-12000 32
12000-16000 16
16000-20000 2
Using appropriate percentiles, answer the following:
I. What are the limits within which incomes in middle 50% of the families lie?
II. It is decided that 80% of the families should pay income tax. What is the
minimum taxable income?
III. What is the minimum income of the richest 30% of the families?

2. An organization has three offices, one each in Jaipur, Nagpur and Raipur. Wages
differ from city to city. The following table gives average wages and standard
deviation of wages in the three offices during the past year.
Average wage Standard deviation
Jaipur 3200 622
Nagpur 1100 400
Raipur 500 95
The wages of an employee in Jaipur increased to Rs. 3760, in Nagpur the wages
increased to Rs. 1500 and in Raipur wages increased to Rs. 850. Which of the three
got the smallest raise in relation to the mean a d standard deviation of his offices?

3. A sample of 400 bulbs was put to test to find out their burning life. The results of the
tests are given below:
Life (in hours) No. of Bulbs
1600-1800 14
1800-2000 46
2000-2200 60
2200-2400 73
2400-2600 68
2600-2800 62
2800-3000 48
3000-3200 23
3200-3400 6
Find from the given information,
a) Mean life of the bulbs,
b) Standard deviation, and
c) Number of bulbs having a life within 1) mean+-1standard deviation 2) mean+-
2standard deviation 3) mean+-3standard deviation hours.
4. The following is the distribution of heights of the students of a class:

height (cms) No. of Students

120-125 3
125-130 7
130-135 25
135-140 30
140-145 25
145-150 7
150-155 3
a) Calculate Karl Pearson’s co-efficient of skewness using 1) mean and mode, 2)
mean and median.
b) Calculate Bowley’s co-efficient of skewness.
c) Calculate percentile co-efficient of skewness.
d) Draw Box and Whisker plot for the distribution and comment on its nature.
5. Given the median =46 and mode =37, find the missing frequencies of the following
distributions and also calculate Karl Pearson’s co-efficient of the skewness:
Class Interval Frequency
20-30 12
30-40 ?
40-50 ?

organization. Find the coefficient of correlation:
Age (in years) Salary (in Rs.)
