Emotional State
Based on the teens, some of them think that they are emotionally maturing because of the Kdrama
they watch. Through watching Kdrama, teens can learn lessons about life that can serve as a guide
for them especially on the subject of love. They can imagine themselves that they are living the life
of the main character as they watch one episode to another because somehow they can relate to
what the character feels in the story. Youth have been influenced by the show in their way of
emotion. It can cause happiness, sad, angry and excited on what makes the characters excited in the
shows they watch. Somehow they have adopted to the emotions of the characters they can relate
to.
Physical State
Teenagers get really attracted to Korean fashion nowadays, they see that the characters in the show
that they watch have fashionable clothes and makeup. In a certain way, they are being influenced by
how Korean fashion is presented in Kdrama's they watch. They kinda feel that it is an improvement
in fashion tastes and selection compare to the common fashion we have in the Philippines.
Furthermore, they also see Korean fashion as a way to change how other people see them because
according to them, sense of fashion reflects their personality and, it gave them a sense of positive
vibe to present themselves. Some of the teens step towards looking like Kdrama stars in the show
they watch. Therefore, they grew their hair so that they can have bangs and they are also applying
makeup like the Korea drama stars do even though they are Filipino men.
Some of the teenagers sacrificed their time to eat food and get to sleep just to watch their favorite
drama. That's why their physical appearance gets also affected. They start to have eye bags and
skipping meals oftenly causes them to have stomach cramps.
Mental State
Watching Kdrama also affects the mental state of a teenager. Based on them, linguistics has been
tampered because of Kdramas. Now, Filipino youth start to use Korean expression and terms instead
of using Filipino slang such as "oppa" means older brother, "unnie" means older sister, and "aegyo"
which means "Oh my god" or acting cute randomly like how the characters perceived on some
shows.
Youths across the world have been watching Korean dramas with many appealing characters and
lovely videos of Korean celebrities. K-drama has been popular and creates a big impact to all young
Filipinos. After watching K-dramas for many times, teens unfornately start seeing that South Korean
have the characteristics or behavior as similar as those characters in the drama.
Fans only have positive perspectives toward Korean celebrities because they always notice the
positive sides of those celebrities, shared across media, especially Twitter. Therefore many
audiences and fans to desire to have boyfriends with similar characteristics, and appearances just
like celebrities and characters in drama. Moreover, some of them wish to have South Korea men as
their boyfriends. Many numbers of audiences of Korean drama and reality TV shows have belief
toward their relationship in the same pattern, portrayed through those media. Tara Ooi’s quote of
Punyanunt-Carter explains that mass media strengthens audiences’ unrealistic perception of
romantic relationship. But these people’s perception about South Korean based on drama they are
watching is being disputed by the unwell-known truth that their perception is opposite to what
reality shows. This aims to display the opposite side of South Korean and to help the youth in
classifying reality and unreal images. It intents to raise awareness of reality and to prevent diffusion
of stereotype.
Finding a Partner
As teenagers get addicted in watching K-dramas, their standards for a partner also gets higher. It is
because of the romantic charm and striking beauty of the Korean actors and actresses which made
them feel “kilig” and fall in love with the character. Because of that, the viewer is already setting up
her mind as to what characteristics her ideal man or woman should have. This lead them to wish
that they can also have a guy or a girl that has the same characteristics a similar to what they see in
dramas. Therefore, they it is included to their goals that they will go to South Korea and find their
ideal type of partner in life. As a result, the viewer gets turned off easily by normal guys or girls. And
since they got accustomed to the good looking Korean leading men, they tend to lean towards those
physical attributes.
Student Learning
Korean dramas are undeniably addictive. The plots can go from cliché but subtle to deep and
unpredictable, which is probably the main reason as to why Filipino students love it. The effects
student’s addiction of watching K-drama is very alarming. It makes them to reduce their study time
and give more time in watching their favorite drama shows. That’s why students come to school half
asleep. According to Athena Gliddon, less time studying means slower learning.
Social Interaction
Through the social interaction of Filipino youth viewers with their friends who share the same
interest, K-drama became a source of topic within the course of communication which acted as a
pathway for Filipino viewers to build bonds and connection with each other. This helps them in
maintaining their relationship with one another.
Through watching K-drama, the audience have unconsciously adapted values when it comes to how
they socialize with their friends. Other viewers said that the lack of interest of their non-Korean
drama friends is a factor why they have a different way of socializing with them. According to
Hoffner & Buchanan (2005), individuals have an essential need to create connections with other
people, and television dramas offer the viewers to access a wide range of other human beings to
connect with.
Food Comsumption
According to Hwang (2009), Korean dramas serves as an expansion of introducing the food, fashion,
travel and living in their culture. Because of the exposure of Korean Dramas to teenagers, they start
to have interest regarding the Korean food consumption. Many of them appreciate how the food
was presented aesthetically and how the shots made it look delicious to watch and look at. It
encourage them to try and accept Korean food as a cultural norm.
Beauty Standards
Filipino youth also start to have interest in K-Beauty as they are watching dramas for so long. It
affects the way they see beauty or their standards. Teens learn how to use Korean skin care
products like how is it portrayed in the dramas. Now, they prefer to have less make-up and give
more focus to their skin-care routine just like Korean celebrities. Filipino men are also influenced by
K-beauty wherein they also put make-ups because they see a lot of South Korean actors wearing it
with confidence even though they are men.
FUTURE
The negative effects of addiction of Filipino teenagers with Korean culture through cultural
appreciation and watching Korean Dramas would be too severe than we think.
According to Joseph Solis Alcayde Alberici, political scientist and economical analyst, the influence of
Korean culture in the Philippines through neocolonialism will further change and confuse Filipino
culture at the highest level. Philippine government in the future would be practically controlled by
future Korean governments and Korean interests would surely conquer Filipinos, therefore another
type of indirect colonialism of Korea to the Philippines.
He also claimed that if future Philippine government tries to impose Korean language at mandatory
level at the basis of K-Pop popularity right now, the resistance of those who would oppose the
measure would be strong and cultural war in the Philippines would increase that would make
cultural wars in the United States or Europe a pieace of cake.
