ASSIGNMENT
MOTIVATION
Supraja: The reason behind this idea for her was her son Aaron. He wanted to work for a social
initiative after his 10th standard. He started visiting the hospice, working with Dr.N.S. Raju,
Managing Trustee of Age Care Foundation. She followed suit and started donating for the noble
foundation. However, she realised that this kind of giving should come from her earnings. She
decided to start up her own venture which is a boutique and mooted the idea to Madhavi, who
received it with great enthusiasm and equal zeal.
Madhavi: She had a rather simple and straightforward reason to be there. Her children have
grown independent and she had a lot of free time on her hands. Perhaps, the latent desire to
design clothes was always with her and of course, Supraja kindled it.
MODUS OPERANDI
They travel to places like Jaipur, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai every two months to handpick their
products. They stock everything from daily, casual wear to prêt line, boutique style. They offer
tailoring services and customise as per the client’s demands. They both bring different skill sets
to the table. While Madhavi is good at designing, Supraja expertise lies in choosing the right
colours. Their tastes too vary. They prefer pastel, nude colours and vibrant ones. This kind of
contradictions really help in making their collection a rich mix of colours and designs.
CHALLENGES
The foremost of all is neither of them have background experience nor knowledge on how to run
it. Nor did they do any homework or research before they took the plunge. Hence, there were
many hiccups en-route. It took them some time to understand the customers’ tastes and
requirements. It is all hands on learning. They feel it is ultimately a good fashion sense that helps
them survive in this industry.
They started on 4th Nov 2017 and four days later the government declared demonetization. It
absolutely overwhelmed them. As time passed they came in terms with it. Understanding the
market and clients is the key to any business. Know the pulse of the people and you are bound to
be the brand that they love to associate with,
USP
Their palette has assorted outfits from multi-designers, allowing the customers to pick a creation
that best appeals to their better sense. They have a budget-friendly boutique that caters to people
who look for constant change and don’t repeat their dresses.
POWER OF CLOTHES
People judge by the way one dresses. They think that wearing a stunning outfit can result in
becoming a head-turner. They also claim that good dress can certainly elevate one’s mood.
MISCONCEPTION
For them sarees being outdated is a misconception. They feel that this timeless six-yard apparel
has seen many twists and swirls. They create an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary style
by creatively pairing saree with jeans.
FUTURE PLANS
They want to keep this running smoothly, introducing a good wedding collection. They also wish
to hold exhibitions at different locations. They even want to encourage young designers by
holding events in Sia to showcase their collection.
AARON BOTHWICK
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
He doesn’t design clothes to shock people and create awe. He lets his imagination fly free and
beyond the ordinary. His philosophy centers on making a person feel and look gorgeous. If he
does that, his mission is accomplished.
THE PROCESS
He brings a contemporary update to the indigenous handlooms. He goes to villages to pick up
materials. He draws designs, decide on the embroidery, cut & colour pattern. Then it goes to his
tailors. All his clothes are customizable. His brand “LABEL AB” includes- DEVANGANA
(festive wear), BANDHURA (occasion wear) and AVANI (pret collection of linen with thread
work).
FUTURE PLANS
He will be launching an exclusive and exquisite range of evening gowns and party wear in
December. He shall tour villages to explore, research and understand different handloom fabrics.
WELFARE INITIATIVE
He runs a group called “Earth’s Shepherds” which plants saplings all over the colony and waters
them. Earlier, he used to visit the hospice at Age Care Foundation.
