Circle Theorem: To Prove: BOC 2 BAC Construction: Join AO and Produce It To D Proof

The document describes the circle theorem, which states that the angle at the center of a circle is twice the size of the angle at the circumference if both angles are subtended by the same arc. It proves this through constructions and equations using properties of isosceles triangles and exterior angles.

Circle Theorem

1) Statement: The angle at the centre of a circle is double an angle at the

circumference subtended by the same arc.

Let ABC be a circle with centre O and radius OC

Let BOC be the angle at the centre and BAC be the angle at the circumference standing
on the same arc.
To prove: <BOC = 2<BAC
Construction: Join AO and produce it to D
Proof:
In ∆OAB, OA=OB [Radii of the same circle]
So, <OAB = <OBA [Base angles of isosceles triangle]
Now, exterior <BOD = <OAB+<OBA
So, <BOD = 2<OAB
Similarly, in ∆AOC
The exterior <COD = 2<OAC
For Fig-1, adding the equations
<BOD+<COD = 2<OAB+2<OAC
Or, <BOC = 2(<OAB+<OAC)
So, <BOC = 2<BAC
For Fig.-2, taking the difference of the equations
<COD-<BOD = 2<OAC-2<OAB
Or, <BOC=2(<OAC-<OAB)
So, <BOC = 2<BAC
