The rubric assesses compare/contrast essays on several criteria including the introduction and thesis statement, body paragraphs and organization, balance of ideas, conclusion, conventions, and MLA format. An excellent essay would have an effective introduction with a clear thesis statement outlining the main points. Each body paragraph would include a topic sentence, supporting details, and transitions between ideas. The essay would also maintain a balanced perspective and strong conclusion restates the thesis. Very few errors would distract from the content.
