depending on the manner in which it is articulated.

PRACTISING EVERYDAY DIALOGUES IN ENGLISH

THROUGH ROLE PLAYS

What is role-play?

Role-play is the activity where one would be given a role to play. Role play is any speaking
activity where you either put yourself into somebody else’s shoes or you may stay in your own
shoes but put yourself into an imaginary situation. While planning the role of someone else the
student reflects either himself or the character chosen by him. In the character the student has to
think in a broader way, correct his attitude and find facts and responsibilities that are required for
an ideal personality.

Role-play allows a student to prepare thoroughly for real life situations. Role-play improves
speaking & listening skills, of the students and develops their communication techniques. They
learn to use appropriate language in real life communication.

DO’S

1. Understand your role & act accordingly.

2. Frame sentences, questions and answer properly.
3. Be yourself. Be natural.
4. Use positive body language.
5. Maintain very good eye contact.
6. Maintain very volume of the voice.
7. Understand the question and then answer.
8. Check voice modulation, stress, intonation and speed.

DONT’S

1. Answer without understanding the question.

4. Speak without giving time to other person.

The students are given various role play topics in their groups of 10. After some
preparation they come before the class to do their play. They are evaluated by the
instructor for dialogues, acting body language and vocabulary. If not able to perform they
are encouraged to speak in vernacular language and translations or inputs are provided by
the Instructor.

ORAL PRESENTATION

Presentation is a form of oral communication in which a person shares factual information with a
particular audience. Therefore, careful preparation is necessary .In the exercise, the students
select their topic and are given a fortnight to plan their presentation. The Instructor helps them
for power point slide content and right display.

Structuring your presentation

Being clear about your objective is the first and the most important rule for giving an effective
presentation. When you are deciding on your objective, you have to take into account both what
you know about the topic and what your audience knows.

Stage 1: Preparation

1. Plan a short talk (two to three minutes) on the topic.

2. Plan what you will say about the topic that you have choosen. Make short
notes- - under each of the following headings:

Stage 2: Practice

1. Practice your talk by speaking to other students. They should take note of your
main points.
2. When you have finished your talk, look at their notes. Have they understood
all your main point? Have they recognized your languages signals?
3. Discuss what you should do to make your meaning clearer.

Stage 3: Presentation

10
Laboratory Manual
English For Communication (BT 103) 2019
Now work with two other students (not with the partner as in stage2) and take
turns in giving your talk a second time. Pay particular attendance to the way you signal a move
to a new section. Check afterwards whether the listeners’ notes match what you intended to
say. Is any essential information missing from their notes?

Stage 4: Evaluation

What did you find when you looked at the other student’s notes?

Which of the following did you discover?

(a) They both understood all your main points.

(b) They differed in what they had understood.
(c) They had misunderstood one or more parts.

Using Visual Aids in Oral Presentation

A visual aid is anything which the audience can see, and which helps them to follow your
spoken presentation and maintains their attention and interest.

Types of visual aids

1. Overhead projectors and transparencies.

2. Slide projectors and slides.
3. Using laptop computer and data projector.

Submission of file on the topic of Presentation is separately done to the Instructor.
