Chapter 1

1 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER
The word computer is derived from the word “Compute” which means
to calculate. Computer is a modern machine that is used to solve different kinds of
problems according to set of instructions given to it. (ASLAM, et al., 2018)

1.1 TYPES OF COMPUTEr

1 Analog computers
The word analog means continuously varying in quantity .It accept input data in
continuous form and output in the form of graph .It is slow in data processing speed. It is
not easy to use. These are used in different fields of engineering and medicine.
(YURKINAS, 77897)

Digital Computers
The word digital means discrete. It accepts input data in digital form and output is received in
digital form. It is fast in data processing speed. It is easy to use. These are used in business and
hospitals. (GFBL, 897)

Hybrid Computers
These computers have combined features of both analog and digital computers. The users can
process both the continuous and discrete data. These are fast and accurate. These are used in
space ships and missiles.

1.3 CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER

1.3.1 Super Computer
It is the most powerful and fastest computer. It is also very expensive. It is used to solve the
complicated problems. It is used weather forecasting, online banking etc.

1.3.2 Micro Computers

This is named because of their small size as compared to other computers. The processing speed
of microcomputer is less than mainframe but more than personal computer. It consists of
multiple processors. These are used in business, education and many other government
departments.

1.3.3 Mainframe Computer

It is the second largest computer. It is large in size and also very expensive. It has multiple
processors. It is used in large organizations such as insurance companies and banks.

2.1 COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER

2.1.1 Memory unit

A component of the computer that is used to store data and instructions is called memory.
The personal contains a main memory. It reads data and instructions from memory and
process data according to given instructions.

2.1.2 Secondary Storage Devices

It is used to store data and programs permanently for later use. It storage capacity is up to
Terabytes (TB) for personal computers. Hard disks USB are the examples of secondary
storage.

2.1.3 Central Processing Unit (CPU)

It is the most important component of the computer. It is also known as processor. It is
the brain of the computer. It processes the data according to given instructions and
converts into useful information.

2.1.4 Input Device

The data and instructions are given to the computer as input. The input device is used to
give input to computer .e.g. Keyboard, mouse and scanner.
