MODULE 3 Earth Science Earth System and Flow of Energy

The document discusses key components of the Earth system including geology, the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and ecosystems. It defines geology as the scientific study of the planet Earth. The atmosphere is described as the gaseous layer surrounding the lithosphere, composed primarily of nitrogen and oxygen. The lithosphere includes the solid parts of the planet from the crust to the inner core. The hydrosphere encompasses all water on and near the Earth's surface, covering about 70% of the planet. Ecosystems and the biosphere are necessary to support life through processes like photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient cycles.

Geosphere or Lithosphere A gaseous part of the Earth
refers to the solid Earth, that surrounds the Earth and
includes rock and other protect from harmful rays of
inorganic material of the planet the sun

Hydrosphere includes all water

on and near Earth surface that
covers the 2/3 of its part.
Atmosphere

Hydrosphere

Lithosphere
THE ATMOSPHERE
ATMOSPHERE

• Gaseous layer of that envelopes the lithosphere

• Composed of 78% Nitrogen (N), 21% Oxygen (O2), 0.9 Argon (Ar)
and trace amount of other gases
• One of the most important process in Earth System where heat
equally redistributed through atmospheric circulation.
• Essential to hydrological cycle.
THE LITHOSPHERE
LITHOSPHERE

• Includes the rock of the crust and mantle, the metallic liquid outer core,
and solid metallic inner core.
• Plate Tectonics as an important process shaping the Earth surface. Primary
driving mechanism is the Earth’s internal heat, such as the mantle convection.
THE HYDROSPHERE
HYDROSPHERE

• 70% of the Earth is covered with liquid water (hydrosphere) and much of it is in the
form of ocean.
• Only 3% of Earth’s water is fresh; 2/3 are in the form of ocean water and the
remaining one-third is present in streams, lakes and ground water
ECOSYSTEM
and BIOSPHERE
Necessary to Support Life
Light – Necessary for photosynthesis. Drives the reaction between CO2 and H2 O to produce food for plants

Water – Covers the 75% of Earth’s surface and most plentiful substance to all of organism. Essential for survival

Air – made up of Nitrogen, Oxygen ,Carbon Dioxide and other gasses in very small quantities
A. Photosynthesis
CO2 + H2 O ===sunlight= glucose + O2
B. Respiration
Glucose (food) + O2 ====== CO2 + H2 O + energy
Necessary to Support Life
Soil – The main foundation for an ecosystem to function, Also filters the water, holds the minerals and essential nutrients.

Temperature – plant growth are regulated by temperature. There’s a certain parts on the plants
called enzyme that can function on a specific temperature

pH – For plants to grow the pH of the soil must be neither acidic or alkaline, the environment should be neutral or
close to being neutral.
