Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

Medium density fiberboard (MDF) is a composite wood product made from compressed wood fibers bonded with wax and resin. It has a smooth, uniform surface and comes in various thicknesses for applications like cabinets, furniture, and signs. While MDF is affordable and stable, it is also heavier than wood and can dull tools during cutting and sanding due to its density. Proper ventilation should be used when working with MDF due to potential formaldehyde emissions.

MEDIUM DENSITY

FIBERBOARD
(MDF)
INTRODUCTION TO MEDIUM
DENSITY FIBERBOARD
(MDF)
DEFINITION

• Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a composite wood

product made of compressed wood fibres, mixed with
wax and resin.

• MDF is similar to particleboard and hardboard,it is known

for its strength, smooth surface and edges and affordable
pricing.

• MDF has many applications and various sizes and comes

with its share of advantages and disadvantages, and is
overall a very popular choice for many woodworkers.
CONT…

• Usually the panel will compressed to density of 0.5

to 0.8 specific gravity in a hot press.

• It varies in colour from tan to chocolate brown.

• Common thicknesses range from 1/4 in. to 1 in., but

most home centres carry only 1/2-in. and 3/4-in.
Full sheets are oversized by 1 in., so a “4 x 8” sheet
is actually 49 x 97 in. A full sheet of 3/4-in.

TYPES OF MDF

EXTERIOR INTERIOR
GRADE GRADE
INTERIOR GRADE MDF
• There are various types of MDF available. The most common,
and cheapest is standard interior grade material.

• This is suitable for most internal applications where moisture

is not a consideration.
EXTERIOR GRADE MDF

• Other grades of MDF include Moisture Resistant for

use in areas of moderate moisture.

• Exterior grade MDF can be used externally for

cladding or signage work.

• For applications where weight is a prime

consideration other, lower densities of fibreboard
are available.
APPLICATION OF MDF
• Cabinet doors and drawer
fronts
• Internal cabinet carcasses
• Display cabinets
• Exhibition plinths
• Lettering & Logos
• Exterior signage
• Exterior cladding
• Boxes and casework
• All types of furniture
ADVANTAGES
• Less expensive than wood, easier to work with,
more uniform and more stable of a material.

• Won't warp, check or crack and has no knots or

surface grain which makes it easier to cut, drill into,
file or paint.

• Can be painted to produce a smooth quality

surface. Oil, water-based paints and varnishes may
be used on MDF
CONT…
• MDF may be dowelled together and traditional
woodwork joints may even be cut.

• MDF may be glued together with PVA wood glue..

Veneers and laminates may also be used to finish
MDF

• Big-dimensioned sheet, customer-required size.

CONT…

• Stable quality from overall-controlled production,

some properties better than natural wood, such as
water-proof, fire-extinguishing, anti-pressing, less
variability, etc.

• Product surface satisfies direct use's requirement,

saved much processing cost.

• Solid interior property, constant quality in the

longitudinal and transverse direction.
DISADVANTAGES
• Medium-density fiberboard is a heavier material
than most solid woods, and because it's so hard
and dense, MDF may dull saw blades and router
bits more quickly than solid wood.

• MDF also causes potential problems if the edges

become waterlogged since the material will swell.
CONT…
• There is a health danger from using MDF because
most MDF panels are made with resins that contain
formaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen. It is best to
wear a respirator and safety goggles and provide
adequate ventilation when you cut or sand MDF to
avoid inhaling the dust.

• The cutting edges of your tools will probably dull

quickly due to the glue fibres in the MDF.
