Design of T-Beam

1) A tee beam with a 150mm thick slab spanning 3m is designed. The beam has an 8m effective span and carries a 4kN/m2 live load. 2) The beam is designed as a singly reinforced rectangular section with M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. 3) The required bottom reinforcement is calculated as 2-25mm bars and 1-32mm bar. Stirrups of 2 legged 10mm bars at 300mm spacing are sufficient for shear.

EX.NO: 8 NAME : S.

DINESH KUMAR
26/09/19 DESIGN OF T-BEAM REG NO : 122105003

1)A tee beam of an office comprises of a slab 150 mm thick spanning between ribs spaced at 3 m
centers. The effective span of the beam is 8 m. Live load on floor is 4 kN/m2. Using M-20 grade
concrete and Fe415 HYSD bars, design one of the intermediate tee beam.

S.No Description Notation Relation Value Unit Remarks

Given Data:
Effective span L = 8m
Effective breadth of flange B = 3m
Depth of flange df = 150 mm
Live load wL = 4 kN/m
2
Grade of concrete fck = 20 N/mm
2
Grade of steel fy = 415 N/mm

1) SETTING OF DIMENSIONS:

Assume, L/d = 15 → d = L/15 → d = 0.53333333 ≈ 550 mm

Effective cover d' = 50 mm (Assume)
Overall depth of beam D = 600 mm (D=d+d')
Depth of web dw = 450 mm (dw=D-df )
Breadth of web b = 300 mm ( b=D/2 )

2) LOAD CALCULATION:

i) Self weight of the flange (df Bϒc) = 11.25 kNm (ϒc →25kN/m3)
ii) Self weight of the web (dw bϒc) = 3.375 kNm
iii) Live load (BwL) = 12 kN/m
iv) Finishing load FL = 1.375 kN/m
v) Total load w = 28 kN/m

Factored load wu = 42 kN/m (PSF=1.5)

3) CALCULATION OF BENDING MOMENT AND SHEAR FORCE:

Bending moment Mu = 336 kNm (wuL2/8)

Shear force Vu = 168 kN (wuL/2)

4) DETERMINATION OF TYPE OF DESIGN:

Muf = 0.36 fck Bdf (d-0.42df ) → Muf = 1577.88 kNm

Since, Mu < Muf → it must be designed as a Rectangular section.
For Fe415, Mu,lim = 0.138 fck Bd2 → Mu,lim = 2504.7 kNm
Since, Mu < Mu,lim → it must be designed as a Singly Reinforced Beam.
S.No Description Notation Relation Value Unit Remarks

5) CALCULATION OF STEEL REQUIRED:

Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d(1-[(Ast fy)/(Bd fck)]) → ( fy/fck B )Ast2 - dAst + ( Mu/0.87fy ) = 0 → ①

a = 0.006916667 b= -550 & c= 930619
2
By solving the quadratic equation, Ast1 = 1729.6576 & Ast2 = 77788.4 mm

6) PROVISION OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT:

2
Ast,min = (0.85 bd)/fy → Ast,min = 337.951807 mm (Ast,m=1730)
2
Ast,max = 0.04 bD → Ast,max = 7200 mm
2
Therefore, Ast,req = 1729.65763 mm (Astmin<Ast1)

2 2 2
dia: 25mm → 490.9 mm (2 nos) = 981.746875 mm (ast = ∏d /4)
2 2
dia: 32mm → 804.25 mm (1 nos) = 804.24704 mm
2
1785.99392 mm

Therefore, provide 2 - 25mm Ø bars and 1 - 32mm Ø bars in the bottom.

2
Therefore, Ast,pro = 1785.99392 mm

7) CHECK FOR SHEAR:

2
Ʈv = Vu/bd → Ʈv = 0.00101818 kN/mm
Pt = 100 Ast ,pro/bd Pt = 1.08242055 %
2
From Table 19, for the obtained Pt , Ʈc = 0.63 kN/mm

Since, Ʈv < Ʈc → No shear reinfotrcement is needed.

Therefore, provide 2 - legged 10mm Ø stirrups @ 300 mm spacing.

8) DEFLECTION CHECK:

To be safe, (L/d)act < (L/d)base kt kc kf

For this problem, kc = 1 & for simply supported beams, (L/d)base =20

2
fs = 0.58 fy Ast,req / Ast,pro fs = 233.107508 N/mm
For the obtained Pt and fs values, kt = 0.95
b/B = 0.1
For the obtained ( b/B ) value, kf = 0.8

Therefore, (L/d)max = 15.2

(L/d)act = 14.5454545

Since, (L/d)act < (L/d)max → The beam is safe under deflection crieteria.
S.No Description Notation Relation Value Unit Remarks

9) DESIGN OF FLANGED PORTION:

2
Bending moment mu = 31.5 kNm (mu= wuB /12)
By using mu instead of Mu in ① ,

mu = 0.87 fy Ast d(1-[(Ast fy)/(1000d fck)]) → ( fy/1000fck )Ast2 - dAst + ( mu/0.87fy ) = 0

a = 0.02075 b= -550 & c= 87245.5
2
By solving the quadratic equation, Ast1 = 159.6 & Ast2 = 26346.5 mm

Ast,min = 0.12% of bdf Ast,min = 180 mm2

2
Therefore, Ast,req = 180 mm

Spacing of reinforcement S = (ast/Ast) X 1000

2
dia: 8mm → 50.3 mm S = 279.252444 mm (ast = ∏d2/4)
2
dia: 10mm → 78.54 mm S = 436.331944 mm

Therefore, provide 10mm Ø bars @ 300mm spacing in the shoter span direction and the same as
distribution reinforcement.
2
Therefore, Ast,pro = 261.799167 mm
