INTRODUCTION

A. Background Study

Human need an organized medium of communication in

any given social set up. This medium is normally referred to as
language. Language as a medium of communication among
humans possesses numerous attributes such as being
governed by rules, is a system and performs such functions as
giving information, expressing feelings and emotions,
establishing rapport, exercising authority and an identity
marker. The term multilingualism or multilingual which is the
focus of this article is derived from two Latin words namely
“multi” that means many and “lingua” that means language.
Thus multilingual is referred to as the ability of a speaker to
express himself or herself in several languages with equal and
native like proficiency. However, it has been realised in both the
written and verbal communicative practices that proficiency in
one language usually tends to dominate in a multilingual set up
as compared to the others. Multilingual can also be regarded as
the co-existence of several languages can be official or
unofficial, native or foreign and national or international.

Any given school or society is generally considered as a

multilingual one if its members or co-students are multilingual.

6
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF CAVITE FOUNDATION

The multilingual students on many occasions tend to show

identifiable full range of communicative competence in several
languages in school.

In general, the functional differentiation of languages tend

to give rise to other ways of classifying languages as mother
tongue (first language of a speaker), vernacular (language
spoken in a particular area or specific group of people but not
generally an official), national, official and the global or
international languages.

B. Statement of the problem

The general question for this study is “What is the positive

effect of Multilingual to Grade 11-HUMSS of Philippine
Christian University?”

A number of sub-questions were subsequently generated:

1. What is multilingual?
2. How many languages does a student know?
3. How do students feel about Filipino language?
4. What language do they prefer most and why?
5. How important does being multilingual on students daily
life?

C. Objectives of the Study

This research relied on the following four main objectives:

1. To produce a research based data with regards the
positive effects of multilingual to the students.
2. To open discussion about multilingualism.
3. To further identify the common language that students
usually use.

7
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF CAVITE FOUNDATION

4. To examine the importance of multilingual to the daily

communication of the students.

D. Hypothesis

Multilingual make a way to a better communication for

students who have different languages. It does not only helps
student to communicate with others, but it also gives more
knowledge and learning to the students. It helps them to
translate the language for themselves and for others. It gives
them the ability to speak to many people.

E. Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will focus to the positive effects

of Multilingual to all the grade 11-HUMSS of Philippine
Christian University. The more language a student or a person
know, will help lead them to a better communication with
others. Students will learn more language and knowledge. For
the researchers, the study will help them to understand and find
out the positive effect of knowing two or more language.

F. Scope and Limitation

This study compile with the researchers started last

November, 2018 up to ----. Grade 11-HUMSS students of
Philippine Christian University are the respondents of this
research. The interview will conduct at the respondent
residence. This research is all about multilingual and the
positive effects of it to the students.

G. Definition of terms

To understand and clarify the terms used in this study, the

following as hereby defined:

8
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF CAVITE FOUNDATION

Communication - is a two way process, it involves both how

we send or deliver the message to other person and how we
receive it from them.

HUMSS – or Humanities and Social Sciences, is designed for

those who wonder what is on the other side of the wall. This is
for those who are considering taking up journalism,
communication arts, liberal arts, education, and other social
science-related coursed in college.

Language – the method of human communication, either

spoken or written, consists with the use of words in a structure
and conventional way.

Mother Tongue – it is the language which a person has grown

up speaking from early childhood.

Multilingual - able to use more than two languages for

communication, or (of a thing) written or spoken in more than
two different languages.

H. Conceptual and Theoretical Framework

Theoretical

Using a number of languages by an individual speaker or

by a community can be marked as multilingualism. Usually
multilingualism does not mean that all languages are known
equally. Vijayvargiya and Dewangan stated that multilingualism
has two types; languages learned in a formal setting through
planned and regular instruction, as in a school system, and
languages acquired in a natural setting through the interaction
with people speaking different languages.

This issue becomes clear in Moroccan context. For

instance, a person from the Atlas Mountains whose first

9

language is Tashelhit, uses Moroccan Arabic in Rabat where

he lives, and works at a school where he teaches French. Multi-
linguals may use a number of languages on account of many
different social, cultural, and economic reasons (Kemp, C.
2009. p. 12).

In this regard, multilingualism makes a person, especially

students learn more rapidly and easily in their first language
(L1) because s/he transfers learning strategies from other
codes. The relation between two or more languages is
probably relevant owing to the role it plays; it facilitates the
operation of learning, particularly if the systems of writing are
nearly the same.

A research conducted by Giva and Seigel (2000) shows

that multi-linguals are more advanced in cognitive development
in comparison to monolinguals. The former acquires skills in
both languages and transfers them into the other, since
students have increased the ability to apply more reading skills
effectively, due to their greater experience in language learning
and reading in two or more different languages. While the latter,
acquires skills only in one language. This indicates that the
operation of transfer can be in the same domain.

Multilingualism, then, displays greater cognitive flexibility,

better problem solving and higher-order thinking skills as
Hakuta (1986) suggests. Indeed, multi-linguals are affected by
other literacy and knowledge acquired through other languages.
It enables them to be more flexible in their thinking, and learn
reading more easily.

Multilingual students are able to communicate in each

parent’s dominant language (Larouz, 2013), if it happens to be
each from different region. This, of course, may facilitate the
operation of communication with parents and friends, as well as
making the relationship closer with each parent. For example, a

10
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF CAVITE FOUNDATION

student whose mother is from Visayas and his father from

Tarlac will find it easy to communicate with both parent’s
families; he will use Bisaya with his family and friends from
Visayas and he will use Ilocano with his family and friends from
Tarlac. Multilingualism at this level may serve as an interfamily
bridge. This student may carry forward the father’s heritage and
language to his mother’s family and vice versa.

Conceptual

Language is one barrier between nations and ethnic

groups that sometimes hinders communication and the
development of friendly relationships. Multilingualism gives
chances for a wider range of communication across nations
and people. Students who are multi-linguals are able to
communicate with classmates, neighbors, and overseas friends
who speak target languages through World Wide Web.

Through multilingualism, people may find solutions to big

issues in the country. First, it provides the chance to experience
three or more cultures in different authentic manners. That is,
multilingualism penetrates the cultures expressed in more than
three languages. Second, multilingualism provides potential
economic effects. Multi-linguals may be in stronger positions for
employment due to the fact that international trade increases,
and the need for employees who know and use more than two
languages increases as well.

Being multilingual actually changes your brain structure,

and this can help you in multiple ways. It improves your
memory, helps you process information better, and helps with
multitasking skills. But the biggest brain benefit is that speaking
multiple languages can actually delay the effects of dementia
by “an average of 5 years”.

It opens up your travel opportunities. Take a trip overseas

and you’ll likely need a tour guide to get you from place to
place. This might hinder you from going to a place you’ve only
dreamed about going. But, if you could speak the native
tongue, you could ask just about anyone where to go, what to
do, and how to get there.

Businesses today look for people who are bilingual or

multilingual due to the diversity in today’s population. Some
companies are globally operated and hiring a person who
knows many languages can give them an edge when it comes
to direct sales. Social workers and school teachers who are
multilingual can make a world of difference to those who are
new to the country.
