TOMORROW'S CARS

CO2 a gas that is part of the atmosphere, is important for many parts of nature like plants, as it helps them make their own
food. We make CO2 when we use petrol cars. This is now dangerous for our world because these cars have sent a lot of CO2
into the air. Then, using electric cars instead of petrol cars is one excellent way to stop problems like changes in the weather.
In the United Kingdom not many cars are electric; so, the government; those who are the managers of the country, believes
there is a lot to do to make electric cars a good change and have a better world to live in. They also believe that it will help
the UK become the first country in the world to make cars that send much less CO 2 into the air.

some pro-nature groups that work to make the world better believe this plan will not work and say that it is too late to stop
CO2 from petrol cars.

In the past two years, the British government has spent billions of pounds studying how to make electric cars and how to
make the British use them. Now they are ready to help companies make more electric cars and less petrol ones and hybrid
cars, which work with both petrol and electricity.

THE HAMBURGUER
There is controversy over the German origin of the hamburger, but it is a U.S. invention,
says "The Hamburger: A History" by Josh Ozersky. However, the origin of the inventor of
the hamburger is still not clear.
It could be Charlie Nagreen, who sold meatballs between two pieces of soft bread in
1885. Or maybe Frank Menches, from Ohio, who sold a sandwich made of meat and soft
bread in Hamburg, N.Y. in 1885. Another possible inventor was Louis Lassen, from Connecticut, who served
some meat pieces between two slices of toast in 1900. There was also Fletcher David, a Texan who sold a meat
sandwich with soft bread in a world exhibition in 1904, where it got the 'name "hamburger."

However, meat and bread -like today's hamburger- was more common in Hamburg, Germany, in the nineteenth
century. It was called Hamburg steak and was a usual dish for the German immigrants that left Hamburg for the
United States. Anyone could prepare it, and they could have it while standing up or walking.
So. the hamburger already existed in the early twentieth century, but it was only food for workingmen and
served in restaurants near factories at midday. However, after the introduction of the automobile in the market
and people's new wish for meals to eat on the road, the reputation of the hamburger improved in 1920.

Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison Thomas Alva Edison lit up the world with his invention of the Electric light. Without him, the world
might still be a dark place. However, the electric light as not his only invention. He also invented the phonograph, the
motion picture camera, and over 1,200 other things. About every two weeks he created something new.
Thomas A. Edison was born in Milan. Ohio, on February 11, 1847. His family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, when he
was seven years old. Surprisingly, he attended school for only two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a
few things, but Thomas was mostly self-educated. His natural curiosity led him to start experimenting at a young age
with electrical and mechanical things at home.

When he was 12 years old, he got his first job. He became a newsboy on a train that ran between Port Huron and
Detroit. He set up a laboratory in a baggage care of the train so that he could continue his experiments in his spare
time. Unfortunately, his first work experience did not end well. Thomas was fired when he accidentally set fire to the
floor of the baggage car.

Thomas then worked for five years as a telegraph operator. but he continued to spend much of his time on the job
conducting experiments. He got his first patent in 1868 for a vote recorder run by electricity. However, the vote
recorder was not a success. In 1870, he sold another invention, a stock-ticker, for $40,000. A stock-ticker is a machine
that automatically prints stock prices on a tape. He was then able to build his first shop in Newark, New Jersey.

Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but thought of his deafness as a blessing in
many ways. It kept conversations short so that he could have more time for work. He called himself a "two-shift man"
because he worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so intensely that his wife had to remind him to
sleep and eat.
Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18, 1931, at his estate in West Orange, New Jersey. He left numerous

What a story!
Stephen William Hawking, a well-known scientist from Oxford, studied physics at Oxford
University. When he was 21 and was doing studies on the universe at Cambridge University,
the doctors found he had a neuro motor problem. Later, his problem got worse but he
wanted to finish his studies. He thought he was going to live only a few months because most
people like him only live for 18 months after diagnosis. In 1985, he had an operation and lost
his ability to speak. At first, he could talk by spelling words moving his eyes when someone
showed him a letter. Then, he was able to choose words from a computer screen with a
switch.
In 1998, his first book, which was about the universe, was very popular, but many people did not finish it
because it was difficult to understand. In 2005, he wrote a simple version called A brief History of Time.
“Before I got ill, my life was boring,” he said. But then he had dreams about giving something good to the
world, so he began to improve his work and now we can understand the universe better. He said his success
came from the help of his wife and children, other people, and government organizations. Hawking worked as
a Lucasian Proffessor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a job that Newton also had had in 1663.

THE EUROTUNNEL

In 1957, an engineering company started studying the possibility to join

Britain and France through a tunnel under the sea. It would have two trains
for passengers as well as a small service train. In 1973 the ideas went into
action and the hard work began. A short time later, they were stopped
because there wasn't enough money to complete the project.
In 1984, several companies showed their ideas to re-start the project two variations of railway, a road and a big
bridge over the English Channel. The chosen project was the railway solution that was very similar to the one
presented back in 1973. This time with help from both the British and French, a private company began the
construction.
On January 20th 1986, the company TransManchelink (TML) said that a long tunnel would be constructed.
They chose a route from Folkestone in England to Calais in France. This wasn't the shortest possible way and
the company needed to work harder than 13 years before.
It took seven years to complete the Eurotunnel and about 13,000 people worked on it.
The two ends of the smallest platform met on December 1st 1990 and lots of journalists and photographers
went to the opening ceremony. Later, in 1991 the two long trains met. The hard work continued and three

River dolphins
River dolphins were first described by Henri Marie Ducrotay in 1817. He also gave them
names. There are 38 kinds of dolphins, but 33 are sea dolphins and only 5 of them make
their homes in large rivers. Although the pink dolphin lives in the Amazon River, it can
also be found in the Orinoco and Madeira Rivers in smaller numbers. While they are
mostly pink, river dolphins can be light gray or brown but science has not found out why
they have their lovely color. We guess they become pinker when they are excited, as it
happens to when we're mad.

River dolphins, like the ones in Southeast Asia or La Plata river, are clever; however, the pink dolphins in the Amazon
are the cleverest, but not as much as dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean. Pink dolphins make sounds to show they enjoy
being close to people; some stories of people being pushed close to the river by them are popular in the Amazon. If a
pink dolphin cries, people think something bad may happen. However, if this happens, they will use the dead animal's
oil to help other animals with health problems like infections, but they won't use the meat.

Unfortunately, river dolphins have died as we have built new towns around their area and changed the rain forests.
Also, they are caught with other animals to be shown in aquariums

HOW PLANES WERE BORN

The history of planes started before the 1800's. In the 16th century, Mark Clerck was one of
the first men who began thinking of how to fly a machine; he had dreams and made
drawings of a helicopter, but he did not actually build it.

The Irwins, two French brothers, made a balloon that flew for more than five miles in 1738.
In 1848, John Hartman made a small model plane that was able to make short flights. Then in January of 1890, Samuel
Secrest, tried to fly a flying machine once; the weather was so bad, so he tried again the next month, but it didn't work.
Then he flied another plane, but it didn’t go up, so he stopped the project.

By 1901, Orville and Nathan Wright prepared their new machine 1 1 S to fly, but it did not work the first times. Finally, on
December 17, 1903, they built the Kitty Hawk Flyer, which after trying many I times, stayed in the air for 12 seconds. The
Wright Brothers did 1,000 short-distance flights in the desert of North Carolina. As a result, in 1907, air transport began.

In 1905. the first airplane company was made by two pilots from Rome, Gabriel and Charles Oliveri, while the American
Brett Graham, and the British Mike Major, were starting the first US airplane company in New York.

THE FIRST BASKETBALL GAME

Basketball was first played by the early Olmec people from old Mexico. Most people think it was invented in
Canada, but actually the first basketball match, as we know it today, was played in Springfield, the U.S.A. ON
January 20th, 1891, Dr Naismith was asked by the director of a school to think of a new game students could
that were easy to understand, and put together two fruit boxes for goals.

But basketball has changed since then, in fact, the first 13 instructions have grown to over 100. The most
important changes are the number of players and the ball size. The first game had 18 players, 9 in each team.
Since Naismith did not have the money to make a new ball, they used one for soccer. Some things have not
changed, like the playing area.

The idea of the game was probably unusual to the players, as it was played for 30 minutes and the final result
was 1-0. But, in the middle of the first game William R. Chase made the ball go into a fruit box, and then
became known as the first player who helped his team win a basketball game. It was during this game that
people who liked the sport started calling basketball.

Packard in Palo Alto, California where he met Stephen Wozniak. Jobs and Wozniak decided to start a company that would
produce and sell computers. Jobs named the company Apple in memory of a happy summer he had spent in Oregon.

To start the company, Wozniak and Jobs sold their belongings. They designed and built the Apple 1 in Jobs’ house. The
Apple 1 was the first personal computer (PC). They sold it in 1976 at a price of $666. Two years later, they developed the
Apple II which could run some business programs. Steve Jobs lived with his wife, Laurene Powell, and their three children
in Silicon Valley for a long time. He also had a daughter, Lisa Jobs, from a previous relationship. He died in 2011.
