Lesson Plan: Components Equip Ment

This lesson plan aims to teach students in Year 2 how to safely construct water filtration systems using given components and equipment. The lesson will begin with a discussion on the importance of water conservation. Students will then review safety rules and construct their designs in groups, with the teacher providing assistance. To evaluate their understanding, students will reflect on their designs and whether any changes are needed before testing. The lesson aims to help students safely make solutions using initial designs.

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Use components and given equipment to safely make solutions
 Use initial design to construct the solution (water filtration system)

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

- Ensure there is enough space for children with
- Gather materials required by students to create physical disabilities an easily access the whole
their designs class
- Rearrange tables into small groups - Student’s will be working independently to
- Set up supply store ensure the teacher can assist students one on
one
- Organize parent helpers

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:

- Students will revisit the uses of water and how water can be
- Anecdotal notes
5 mins conserved in their daily lives by brainstorming as a whole class. - Questions
- Questioning will be used to prompt students
- “What do we use water for in everyday life?”
- “What can we do to save water?”

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

Safety and expectations

5 mins
- Students will be reminded of classroom rules
- Clear expectations will be instilled in students
- Students will then come up with a list of safety rules that should be
followed during the creation of their water filtration systems
- These rules will be displayed on the board so that they can be
referred to throughout the lesson - Coffee filters,
5 mins recycled bottles,
Organise Cloths, Assorted
- Students will sit at their desks and wait for their table to be called to recycled
the supply store. containers, Sand,
- Those students waiting will look over their designs Rocks, Strings,

2

- Students at the supply store will show their list of material needs to
the teacher and buy only what they have requested on their plan Elastic bands.
30 mins
Develop
- Students will again be reminded of the safety rules they must follow
- Students will then begin constructing their designs using their plans - Anecdotal notes
and purchased materials
5 mins - Classroom teacher will use this time to assist struggling students
Assess - Technology
- Once students have finished constructing their water filtration notebooks
systems, they will complete a reflection in their technology note
books. Students will need to reflect on the following:
- Am I happy with my design so far? What went well?
- Do I need to redesign before testing my system?
5 mins - What alterations if any will I make before testing?

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

As a whole class students will reflect on the construction process, sharing

what they think went well, what didn’t work, what could be done next time and
what would could be alter or redesigned

5 mins

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

- All materials need to be packed away properly

- Students will place their water filtration systems in the storeroom for
safe keeping
- Students will then follow usual steps

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

- Anecdotal notes during brainstorm and construction

- Rubric outlining lesson objectives
