Brief

The document describes a scenario where students must design water filtration systems after becoming stranded on a desert island with no clean water. It instructs students to design, build, and test 3 different portable filtration systems using recyclable materials. They are to consider factors like clarity of filtered water, speed of filtration, amount of water filtered at once, materials used, inspiration from other designs, and reliability in an emergency situation.

DESERT ISLAND WATER

FILTRATION SYSTEM!
Oh no Year 6's! Your boat has just capsized, taking with it all your water
resources. You swim to the nearest desert island in hope of fresh water, but
all you find are muddy waterfalls and dirty creeks. You need to think fast
and smart, how are you going to access fresh water before it’s too late?
You have an idea! You’ll make a water filtration system that turns the mucky
water into clean water that’s safe for you to drink!

You need to design, construct and trial 3 different water filtration systems.

Your designs need to include a variety of recyclable/found materials that you believe
will help filter the water. Also, use a variety of strategies so that the results will
differ.

Rules! Your designs must:

Be made from recyclable materials (apart from e.g. sticky tape etc.)
Be different from each other (use different materials & strategies)
Be portable - you must be able to move them around.

What do you need to do?

1. Research DIY water filtration systems and note down your favourite ideas.
2. Design your 3 filtration systems! Remember: each design must have labels.
3. Collect the resources that you need.
4. Create your designs! You can change elements from your designs, but you need to
note this down.
5. Trial your designs and evaluate how successful they were.

questions to consider
How clear was the resulting water? Were there bits floating around?
How fast / slow was your system in filtering the water?
Can it filter lots of water at once?
Did you have to use lots of materials and were they hard to access/limited?
Did you base your design off of one you had seen previously?
Would you trust your filtration system if you were stuck on a desert island?
Which was your favourite design?
Was the presentation well done?
