P1 Script For The Documentary

Human activities can damage the environment in several ways: 1) Urbanization and population growth increases impervious surfaces and waste, affecting water quality and pollution levels. A larger population also increases the need for transportation, which burns fossil fuels. 2) Intensified agriculture increases pesticide and fertilizer use, contaminating water and soil. Genetically modified crops can also cause genetic pollution. 3) Pollution from industry, oil spills, litter, and vehicle emissions contaminates waterways and oceans, killing wildlife and causing health issues for humans.

P1) Describe how human beings can damage the environment

There are many different ways in which human being’s can damage the environment.
Some of the ways in which humans damage the environment are:

 Urbanisation and population density

 Intensification of agriculture
 Pollution of environment
 Other affects on the environment

Urbanisation and population density has shown to have a great impact on the
environment. Increasing population often means increased urbanisation, including
conversion of forest, farm, and other lands for housing, transportation, and
commercial purposes. Urbanisation and population growth also tends to increase the
amount of impervious surfaces and the quantity and types of products that humans
produce, use, and discard, thereby affecting waste generation and management, water
quality, and production and use. An increase in population also leads to poverty which
means that people will have less money which leads them to live in cheap areas. Inner
city’s made of industries and businesses can give of lots of pollution. a larger
population needs more transport systems which burn fossil fuels and affect the
atmosphere and human health.

Intensification of agriculture causes large amounts of damage to the environment.

Increased use of pesticides causes water pollution, toxicity to humans and some
pesticides reduce soil quality. Genetically modified crops entail the insertion of genes
from one organism into another producing altered genetic material (DNA).
Modification of crops causes genetic pollution that can not be controlled. It also
allows company’s to dominate agriculture products.

Soil erosion is mainly caused by rain, wind, flooding, overgrazing, soil exhaustion
and deforestation. Short term damage and increased costs can result from: loss of
seeds, seedlings, fertilizers and pesticides, repeat field operations and soil being
washed from plant roots.

Waterway pollution is caused by large amounts of waste being thrown in to lakes and
rivers. This causes many problems some of which are sea creatures being killed and in
some developing countries diseases are caused due to waterway pollution. Industry
waste is a huge source of water pollution, it produces pollutants that are extremely
harmful to people and the environment. Oceans are polluted by oil on a daily basis
from oil spills and routine shipping.

Substances such as petroleum are often stored underground were they causes leakages
which are harmful to the surrounding environment. A large percentage of seas are
polluted with dumping of litter this causes many problems some of which are that
habitats are destroyed this results in many animals dying.

Global warming causes an increase in water temperature which result in death of

many sea creatures as habitats are destroyed. Global warming also results in coral
bleaching of reefs around the world.

Pollution is a global problem. It has affected the lives of millions of people and
caused several deaths and health problems. Environmental pollution is one of the
types of pollutions mainly caused by human actions. Pollution affects living
organisms in an environment making it virtually impossible to sustain life.

Air pollution has unhealthy effects on humans, plants and animals living in the globe.
The main causes of air pollution are fossil fuels that are burnt to produce electricity or
to power transportation vehicles. Land pollution is pollution of our planets land
surface. The main causes of land pollution are increase in urbanisation, increase in
agriculture land and domestic waste. Noise pollution is the cause of many health
problems. The causes of noise pollution are traffic, railway stations, aircrafts and
construction equipment. Noise pollution causes hearing problems and mental health
problems.

Carbon monoxide emissions are the main cause of global warming. It is created by
burning fusel fuels such as petrol, diesel, oil and natural gases. Carbon monoxide
poisoning causes deaths and destroys the environment.

Nuclear power poses a major threat to the environment and to humanity. Like the
pollution produced when fossil fuels are burned, radioactivity can be very dangerous
to living creatures.
