Page Number Formatting

The document provides instructions for numbering pages in a thesis or dissertation with centered numbers on chapter title pages and right-justified numbers on subsequent pages. It explains how to insert a break after the chapter title, unlink and format headers and footers between sections, delete the footer page number on the title page, and insert a continuing page number in the header on subsequent pages. This allows the first page of each section to display a centered number on the bottom while following pages show the number at the top right of the page.

Advanced Use of Headers and Footers in Page Numbering

Graduate students are often required to number the first page of a section differently from the
subsequent pages. The following example demonstrates how to have a centered number on the
bottom of each first page and a right-justified page number at the top of subsequent pages.

To get pages numbered in center bottom on the chapter title page and on upper right hand corner
on the following pages:

1. Insert a break on the title page immediately after the chapter title, (Figure 1), and select the
“continuous” option (Figure 2).

unlink footers between the different sections (Figure 3).

5. Hit the “link with previous” button again to unlink headers between the different sections
(Figure 4).
