– Beer and wine were considered gifts.
– Greeks and Romans honored Bacchus
using wine. They considered Bacchus as
their god of wine.
– Catholic Christians use wine in the
sacrament of communion.

– Victories such as winning competitions
– Weddings and different occasions

3. Fellowship
– Greeks held their famous symposiums
during hours of after-dinner drinking.
– Symposiums mean “drinking together”

– Use to prevent diseases; spirits like
aquavitae were used as medicine.

– During early times, beer and wine were
disease-free, tasty and thirst-quenching

1. Ale House
– It is located along the trade routes, with a
stable, with a place to sleep and
sometimes with meal served.
Ancient Roman
• Pompeii was covered with ashes when Mt.
Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, which revealed
a thriving alcohol industry.
• The emperor prohibited the serving of
alcohol to the people because they believe
that it would cause sedition and revolution.
• Bars and inns were associated with
gambling and prostitutions.

2. Taverns

– Offer wines, beer/ales, meal, and improved


lodging condition.
– Derived from the Latin term taberna,
meaning a shed or workshop.

Ancient Egypt
A papyrus from ancient Egypt warns
“do not get drunk in taverns…for fear that
people repeat words which may have gone
out of your mouth with out you being aware
of being uttered them.”

3. Public Houses/ Pub House/ Pub
– In England, it is a place where people gather
for fellowship and pleasure.
– Each pub was identified by a sign as what a
pub house looked like, with a picture of white
swan or red lion since most people were
unschooled and could not read.

4. Inn
– Was an old concept of the hotel.

5. Cabaret
– It is a place for refreshment with entertainment,
music and dancing; a meeting place for
neighbors gathered to exchange the latest
news and gossip over a mug.
– 1643 – the beginning of American Beverage
service industry.
– 1650 – in Massachusetts a town without a
tavern was given penalty. Often a tavern
was built next to a church.
– 1850 – the tavern was turning into a large
scale inn for travelers and later became
hotels.

6. Saloon
– It is an unsavory place for prostitution,
gambling and other illegal activities such as
drug trafficking and gang wars.

7. Restaurant
– (19th century). It came from the Latin word
resturare meaning to restore. It is a place
where food and beverages are served.

9. Bar
– This is a place where beverages,
generally alcoholic, were sold and served
to the guests.
1920 – Prohibition Law or 18th
Amendment Law was passed.
This made manufacturing, selling and
importation of alcoholic beverage in
American illegal.
• Speakeasies – places that sold illegal
liquors

• Moonshines – term used for illegal liquors

• Bootleggers – are the illegal supplier of


illegal liquors.
• 1933 – 21st Amendment was passed
repealing the Prohibition Law

• Dramshop Law or third Party Liability Law


– this law shifted the liability for damages in the
drunken driven incident from the driver who
caused the accident to the server or the place
that served the drink to the driver.
