BS 44 - Reading Challenges/Struggles and Solutions

The document is from a student named C. Selby about reading challenges they sometimes face and solutions they use to overcome those challenges. Some challenges include unfamiliar vocabulary, long or complex sentences, identifying the main idea, distractions, remembering information, and fear of asking questions. When facing these challenges, Selby does things like clarify vocabulary, break sentences down, reread paragraphs, limit distractions, take notes, and ask questions for clarification. BS 44 - Reading Challenges/Struggles and Solutions

When reading a text, I sometimes struggle with… When faced with this challenge, I do this to help
clarify the text...

Vocabulary that is unfamiliar or difficult to

understand. This could include words, expressions,
and jargon (specialized language).

Sentences that are too long, complex, verbose

(wordy), or complicated causing me to feel lost when
reading.

Finding and understanding the main idea/point of

what I am reading (what the text is saying) and not
understanding the writer’s point of view.
Distractions and things that bring my focus away
from the reading.

Remembering what I read and recalling the

information from a text after reading.

Fear of asking questions or for clarification. I fear

feeling confused, but I am reluctant to ask for help.
Keeping track of details in the text (data, names,
information, etc.) and not getting lost in the specifics
of a reading.

Summarizing and/or paraphrasing a text, making sure

that I accurately represent what the text is
communicating.

Setting my own personal bias or feelings aside to

understand what the author is saying and why they
are saying it.
Disinterest in the reading or text. Feeling forced to
read and not enjoying it.

Other solutions I’ve come up with…
