Calculation Calblesize

This document provides formulas and calculations for selecting cable sizes for electrical systems. It includes formulas for calculating cable length, full load current, voltage drop, horsepower, and short circuit rating. An example calculation is shown for selecting a 3C-240 sq.mm cable based on a 200 ampere single phase load over 1312 feet. Voltage drop and allowable tolerance are calculated. Correction factors and wire size ampacity charts from the NEC are also included.

FORMULAE
Length of Cable in Feet = L * 3.28

Full load Current if KVA known = ( KVA*1000 ) / V *1.73

Full load Current if KW known = ( KW*1000 ) / V * PF * 1.73

Voltage drop = Full load current * Cable Feet * Effective Imedance(Z) / (1000 * No of Runs )

Line to Line voltage drop = Voltage Drop * 1.73

Percentage voltage Drop = Line to Line voltage drop * 100 / Rated voltage

HP = ( V * I * 1.73 * PF * % Efficiency ) / 746

Short Circuit Rating (Per IEC -724)

Isc (kAmp) = 0.143 * q / SQRT (1.1*t)
Where Isc = Short Circuit Current for conductor in k Amp
q= nominal conductor area in sq. mm
t= Short circuit time in seconds.

CALCULATION FOR CABLE SIZE SELECTION - 1 PHASE
LOAD IN AMPERE ● 1 PHASE = 200 AMPERE
VOLTAGE 1- PHASE = 480 VOLTS
LENGTH OF CABLE 3 PHASE = 400 METER

LENGTH OF CABLE = 1312.00 FEET

FULL LOAD CURRENT ( AT CONDUCTOR TEMP 900C ) = 200.00 AMPERE

CABLE SIZE SELECTED = 3C - 240 sq.mm

FOR THE ABOVE LOAD AMPERE ( 3C - 240 sq.mm ) SELECTED

THIS CABLE CARRING LOAD ( SINGLE RUN ) = 430 AMPERE

CORRECTION FACTOR FOR 51-55 oC AMBIENT TEMP = 0.76

CONDUCTOR TEMPERATURE 90 oC
NUMBER OF RUNS = 2 RUNS

THIS CABLE 3C - 240 sq.mm 2 RUNS WILL CARRY = 653.60 AMPERE

THEREFORE, THIS 3C - 240 sq.mm 2 RUNS CABLE IS SUFFICIENT

CALCULATION FOR VOLTAGE DROP
As per NEC Table 9 Effective Impedance (Z) = 0.043 Ohms

Voltage Drop = Impedance(Z)*calble feet(L)*current / (1000*Runs) = 5.64 volts

Line to Line Voltage Drop = 9.76 volts

Percentage ( % ) Voltage Drop - 1- Phase = 2.03 %
