The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a Science 7 class on metals, non-metals and metalloids. The learning objectives are to describe properties of metals and non-metals such as luster, malleability, ductility and conductivity. The lesson plan outlines reviewing a previous lesson, presenting a video to establish the topic, and having students do hands-on experiments in groups to observe and record the properties of different samples. The groups will test samples for electrical conductivity, malleability, luster, brittleness and magnetic properties.

brittleness.

Materials Needed

 Samples of copper,
aluminum, iron, carbon,
and tin
 White paper
 Improvised conductivity
apparatus
 Small hammer
 magnet

Procedure

 Group1-Electrical
Conductivity
Test the conductivity of
each sample by touching it
with the electrodes of the
conductivity apparatus.
The sample is a conductor
if the bulb of the tester
lights. Do the same
procedure to the rest of
the sample elements.

 Group2- Malleability
Remove a small sample of
the element. Gently tap
the sample with the small
hammer. If the sample
gets flat when tapped it is
malleable. Clean the
hammer after use. Do the
same procedure to the
rest of the sample
elements.

 Group3- Luster
Place a sample in a sheet
of white paper. Observe
the appearance of each of
them. If a sample is shiny,
it is luster and if it is not, it
is a dull luster.

 Group4- Brittleness
Remove a small sample of
the element. Gently tap
the sample with the small
hammer. If the sample
shatters, then it is brittle.
Clean the hammer after
use. Do the same
procedure to the rest of
the sample elements.

 Group5- Magnetic
Place each sample near
the magnet. If the samples
get attracted to the
magnet, it means that a
sample has a magnetic
property, if it is not; it
means that it has a poor
magnetic property.

Questions:
1. Locate each element used
in the activity in the
periodic table. Compare
the findings with the
expected properties of the
elements based on their
position in the periodic
table.
2. Locate copper in the
periodic table of elements.
Based on the results of Copper is a metal because it is
the activity and the malleable, luster, ductile and a
position of copper in the good conductor of electricity.
periodic table, what are
the properties of copper?
Is it a metal or a non-
metal? Explain your
answer.

3. How are metals, The periodic table on the left

nonmetals and metalloids separates elements into three

are found at the left part of the
zigzag line while non-metals are
generally found at the right part
of the same line.

a property of brittleness?

F.Developing 1. How are metals different

Mastery from non-metals? Metals are substances that
usually have a shiny
appearance, good conductor of
heat and electricity can be
melted, and is usually capable of
being shaped, while non-metals
are substances that usually have
a dull appearance, poor
conductor of heat and electricity,
brittle, and can be gaseous,
liquids or solids. While metalloids
exhibit the properties of both metals
and non-metals.

2. Are non-metals a good

insulator?
Metals such as copper are
conductors, while most non-
metallic solids are said to
be good insulators, having
extremely high resistance to the
flow of charge through them

3. What are the properties of Metalloids usually look like

metalloids? metals but behave largely like
nonmetals. Physically, they are
shiny, brittle solids with
intermediate to relatively good
electrical conductivity and the
electronic band structure of a
semimetal or semiconductor.
G.Finding
practical Metals, non-metals and
applications of metalloids are also important to
concepts and our daily lives. They are familiar
skills in daily elements that can be found at
living. home.

1. What do you think is the

importance or uses of  Shiny metals such as
metals? copper, silver, and gold
are often used for
decorative arts, jewelry,
and coins.
 Strong metals such as
iron and metal alloys such
as stainless steel are
used to build structures,
ships, and vehicles such
as ships, trains, and
trucks.
 Some metals have
specific qualities that
dictate their use. For
example, copper is a good
choice for wiring because
it is particularly good for
conducting electricity.
Tungsten is used for the
filaments of light bulbs
because it glows white hot
without melting.

2. How about nonmetals?  Oxygen. Oxygen, a gas,

is absolutely essential to
human life. Not only do
we breathe it and use it
for medical purposes, but
we also use it as an
important element in
combustion.
 Sulfur. Sulfur is valued for
its medical properties and
is also an important
ingredient in many
chemical solutions.
Sulfuric acid is an
important tool for industry:
it is used in batteries and
in manufacturing.
 Chlorine. A non-metal,
chlorine is a powerful
disinfectant. It is used to
purify drinking water and
pools.

3. Importance of metalloids. • Some metalloids are

useful semiconductors,
which are used in
electronics (radio,
computers, telephones,
etc.)
• They are useful because
they conduct just the right
amount of electricity or
heat.
