INTRODUCTION
Community development project combines learning objectives and
community service so that the students can enhance their
personalities while being socially sensitive to the issues faced by the
community. The project provides students with the opportunity to
collaborate and engage with an NGO by undertaking a project.
I have worked with the NGO named ARADHANA-a ray of hope which
works on the commitment of providing basic quality education to all
the underprivileged children and adults.
I started with the project COMPUTER KRANTI. In this project, the
children were introduced to a world of smart devices so that it
doesn’t remain an enigma to them but later we found more children
who were not even aware of the basic education. So I thought of
carrying another project ABCL which meant ANY BODY CAN LEARN.
Under this project, basic theoretical education was given to the
children living in the slum areas.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
AND CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM
Uneducated children
Most of the children living in the MARATHA MOHALLA didn’t go to
the schools and there were so many reasons for the same.
• People living in that area were migrants from UTTAR PRADESH
and had no Id proofs. So in such situation the children were not
allowed to get admission in any school.
• Some of them were financially incapable for sending their
children to the schools.
• The parents wanted their children to earn instead of studying.

NO RIGHTS
The people living in the MARATHA MOHALLA had no rights as they
were migrants.
• Article 370.
• They had no registration so they had no rights.
• No access to water and electricity
• No concession on food from the local RASHAN CENTER.

Less exposure
The children were unaware of the world outside the slums.
• The children just used to beg at the nearby public areas.
• Unaware of the other opportunities around.
Hygiene issues
They children and the slums were so untidy
• They didn’t take bath.
• They didn’t even wash hands before eating.
• They didn’t know that one should change clothes on
regular basis.
And due to this , the other children kept a distance from
the children living in the slum areas.

Less exposure to smart devices

These days children are so attracted towards smart devices.
• Financially instability.
In order to achieve their needs, the children used to
snatch smart devices like mobile phones, watches etc

INTOXICATION
The money collected by begging was used to buy basic
intoxication material like beedi etc
OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The objective of the project was to achieve the following
things but When I started doing the project I realised this
project is not just limited to educating children English,
mathematics and computer but it was something more than
that. The objectives to be achieved were :
• To educate the children
To provide the basic quality education to the children
living in the slum areas.
• Introduction to smart devices
To introduce the children to the smart devices so that it
no longer remains an enigma to them
• Improve personal hygiene
To tell them about the importance of personal hygiene.
• Personality development
The overall personality development of a child was as
important as providing them education. It would help
them to become a better human being.

• Not to beg
The purpose was to stop the children from begging at the
local public areas and earn instead of begging.
• Help them to get rid of basic intoxication
the money collected by begging was mostly used for
buying beedis.so the purpose was to get rid of it.

STEPS TAKEN TO ACHIEVE THE

OBJECTIVES
The biggest task was not to educate the children but to
convince their parents and children itself was one. They all
were not financially stable and the money collected by
begging was one of a source. If the children start studying
then their time would eventually be divided. I faced so many
hardship in educating the children and visiting their slum was
one. Some children used to run whenever I visited them
because they were more interested in begging and playing.
So in order to educate them convincing them was the very
first thing that is why we introduced cocurricular activities
and grooming sessions. But apart from it the steps taken to
achieve the objectives were as under-

• Admission of children in a local nearby school.

The ARADHAN organisation left no stone unturned to
help children get an admission in a school. After so many
attempts they were able to find a school which was
nearby the Maratha MOHALLA and so many children got
an admission in school.
• Providing basic stationary material
They were not able to buy the stationary material so the
books and pencils were distributed among the children
by the organization itself. The fund for the same was
collected by the volunteers or people used to come and
donate.
• Tuition classes
Meanwhile the vacations, tuitions were given to the
children so that they could keep a touch with studies. In
these tuition classes, they were taught basic English
words and mathematical calculations.
Awareness session
• In this session, the parents and the children were given
the regarding the importance of education and personal
hygiene.

• Grooming sessions
The grooming session was actually a talking session
where the child could speak his/her heart .In these
sessions the children were taught the moral values.
Emotional stability was given to the children. Basic
manners were also taught to the children.in all it was
given for the all round development that were important
for an individual’s survival.
• Cocurricular activities
Apart from academic tasks children were also taught
singing and dancing. The volunteers tried to find the inner
talents of the children and sharpen them. They were also
taken for outings during weekends.

• Computer classes
The children who were a little educated were taught how to
operate a computer. Basic theoretical education was given
to the children at first and later they were taught practically
as well.

• Introduction to smart devices

As the children are always curious to use smart devices and
also they were unable to fulfil their this need. So in order to
reduce the snatching they were also introduced to smart
devices so that it doesn’t remain an enigma to them

• Special classes
There were session for the young children who used to
do basic intoxication. In these they were given
counselling in which they were discouraged to do so.

Computer Kranti and ABCL were not just the projects for
the kind of education that remains limited to notebooks
only but it was something for the all round development
of a child .

Effectiveness of the project

After the awareness sessions, they were finally a little
convinced and cooperated with us. The children started
going to the school and attended the tuition classes,
computer classes and the grooming sessions sincerely. They
started showing keen interest in the cocurricular activities
as well. They started coming to the classes neat and clean.
They were now aware of the pros and cons of personal
hygiene. Begging and intoxication was reduced, they no
more begged around and . They were now aware of smart
devices and also few English words. They started to read
and write and above all there was a lot of change in their
behaviour and body language. They were more confident
now and also learnt what unity means.

Conclusion
In recent times, a number of social forces have changed
community life for young children. In MARATHA MOHALLA
, main problem was poverty and no rights. Children were
deprived of basic education, they were having health
problems due to hygiene issue. So now ARADHANA is
working to help such children. They need more volunteers
to do so and through this community development project
I was able to add my contribution. By this project I was not
only able to bring a little change in the lives of the people
living there but I believe I have come up as a better person
after working with them.
