What is ICT all about in the field of education?

Information and communication Technology (ICT) are potentially powerful tool for extending
educational opportunities, both formal and non-formal, to previously underserved constituencies—
scattered and rural populations, groups traditionally excluded from education due to cultural or social
reasons such as ethnic minorities, girls and women, persons with disabilities, and the elderly, as well
as all others who for reasons of cost or because of time constraints are unable to enroll on campus.
Anytime, anywhere. One defining feature of Information and communication Technology (ICT) is
their ability to transcend time and space. Information and communication Technology (ICT) make
possible asynchronous learning, or learning characterized by a time lag between the delivery of
instruction and its reception by learners.
Online course materials, for example, may be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ICT-based
educational delivery (e.g., educational programming broadcast over radio or television) specifically the
contribution of Gina Lopez, she produced educational television shows on Science, Math, Values,
History and English for elementary and Philippine Literature for high school (Sineskwela) which I used
to watch when I was a kid (I literary remember it) also dispenses with the need for all learners and the
instructor to be in one physical location. Additionally, certain types of ICTs, such as teleconferencing
technologies, enable instruction to be received simultaneously by multiple, geographically dispersed
learners (i.e.,Classdojo) which instructions are already present upon logging in, basically without
approaching the teacher.
Access to remote learning resources. Teachers and learners no longer have to rely solely on printed
books and other materials in physical media housed in libraries (and available in limited quantities) for
their educational needs. With the Internet and the World Wide Web, a wealth of learning materials in
almost every subject and in a variety of media can now be accessed from anywhere at any time of the
day and by an unlimited number of people.
What is the main purpose of ICT in the education system?
The main purpose of ICT in the education system is to help improve the quality of education. Improving
the quality of education and training is a critical issue, particularly at a time of educational expansion.
ICT’s can enhance the quality of education in several ways:
Motivating to learn. ICTs such as videos, television and multimedia computer software that combine
text, sound, and colorful, moving images can be used to provide challenging and authentic content
that will engage the student in the learning process. Interactive radio likewise makes use of sound
effects, songs, dramatizations, comic skits, and other performance conventions to compel the students
to listen and become involved in the lessons being delivered. More so than any other type of ICT,
networked computers with Internet connectivity can increase learner motivation as it combines the
media richness and interactivity of other ICT’s with the opportunity to connect with real people and to
participate in real world events.
Facilitating the acquisition of basic skills. The transmission of basic skills and concepts that are the
foundation of higher order thinking skills and creativity can be facilitated by ICTs through drill and
practice. Educational television programs such as Sesame Street use repetition and reinforcement to
teach the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes and other basic concepts. Most of the early uses of
computers were for computer-based learning (also called computer-assisted instruction) that focused
on mastery of skills and content through repetition and reinforcement.
What benefit will it give to the user?
(In these question I specifically used students and teacher as the user)
Improves engagement. When technology is integrated into lessons, students are expected to be more
interested in the subjects they are studying. Technology provides different opportunities to make
learning more fun and enjoyable in terms of teaching same things in new ways. For instance, delivering
teaching through gamification, taking students on virtual field trips and using other online learning
resources. What is more, technology can encourage a more active participation in the learning process
which can be hard to achieve through a traditional lecture environment.
Improves knowledge retention. Students who are engaged and interested in things they are studying,
are expected to have a better knowledge retention. For example, if a student is interested in science
experiments he can search the Google or YouTube and simulate that one
Encourages individual learning. No one learns in the same way because of different learning styles and
different abilities. Technology provides great opportunities for making learning more effective for
everyone with different needs. For example, students can learn at their own speed, review difficult
concepts or skip ahead if they need to. What is more, technology can provide more opportunities for
struggling or disabled students. Access to the Internet gives students access to a broad range of
resources to conduct research in different ways, which in turn can increase the engagement.
Encourages collaboration. Students can practice collaboration skills by getting involved in different
online activities. For instance, working on different projects by collaborating with others on forums or
by sharing documents on their virtual learning environments. Technology can encourage collaboration
with students in the same classroom, same school and even with other classrooms around the world.
Students can learn useful life skills through technology. By using technology in the classroom, both
teachers and students can develop skills essential for the 21st century. Students can gain the skills
they will need to be successful in the future. Modern learning is about collaborating with others, solving
complex problems, critical thinking, developing different forms of communication and leadership skills,
and improving motivation and productivity. Technology can help develop many practical skills, including
creating presentations, learning to differentiate reliable from unreliable sources on the internet.
Benefits for teachers; with countless online resources, technology can help improve teaching. Teachers
can use different apps or trusted online resources to enhance the traditional ways of teaching and to
keep students more engaged. Virtual lesson plans, grading software and online assessments can help
teachers save a lot time. This valuable time can be used for working with students who are struggling.
Is the use of ICT needed in teaching?
Yes, as I stated above it improves the quality of education. Information and communication
technologies (ICT) have become commonplace entities in all aspects of life. Across the past
twenty years the use of Information and communication Technology(ICT) has fundamentally
changed the practices and procedures of nearly all forms of endeavor within business and
governance. Education is a very socially oriented activity and quality education has traditionally
been associated with strong teachers having high degrees of personal contact with learners. The use
of ICT in education lends itself to more student-centered learning settings. But with the world
moving rapidly into digital media and information, the role of Information and communication
Technology(ICT) in education is becoming more and more important and this importance will
continue to grow and develop in the 21st century. Effective use of ICT for Education, along with
ICT use in the teaching learning process; quality and accessibility of education; learning motivation.
Teacher use Information and communication Technology (ICT) for making teaching learning process
easy and interesting. A competent teacher has several skills and techniques for providing successful
teaching. So development and increase of skills and competencies of teacher required knowledge of
ICT and Science & Technology. The knowledge of ICT also required for pre-service teacher during their
training programme, because this integrated technological knowledge helps a prospective teacher to
know the world of technology in a better way by which it can be applied in future for the betterment
of the students.
Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) helps students as well as teachers to use more
technology for making teaching learning more attractive for the betterment of our future generation.
Teachers must know the use of Information and communication Technology (ICT) in their subject areas
to help the learners for learning more effectively. So, the knowledge of Information and communication
Technology (ICT) is very much essential

If you were provided the power to make change, what will be the changes that you would
implement on both urban and rural places and field of education specifically in impacting
knowledge?
Today’s educational system is highly complex. Definitely every each of us has different learning style
some are good on linguistic, visual and spatial, interpersonal and others. There is no single learning
approach that works for everyone. Since every one of us has different learning style I would change
the present educational system. Educational system should be divided into classification, what I mean
is classes are classified into learning style. For example, there’s a class who are excellent in visual and
spatial, and there’s also class who are excellent in linguistic. Students are more expected to adapt new
ideas or information in a matter of time when they learn at their own learning styles.
Another changes I would implement is to add some education content: Some only understand education
for good job opportunities.teaching that put students into near realistic life scenario. Classes that put
you in a nearly realistic life scenario that requires you to simulate real life scenarios for a semester;
such as dealing with tax refunds. Classes that ensure you know how to maintain and check for good
credit, paying debt, applying for student loans, putting together a resume, getting a job, paying rent,
fixing a flat on a car, calling emergency service, or any other real life scenario. Teaching how to do
basic home repairs like plumbing, electricity, leaky ceiling, etc. it would be like a game of simulation
but for real. Every task is evaluated on a rubric that assigns life points per task according to how well
that task was completed and you don't continue on until you mastered that life skill. At the end of each
semester the student will receive a report of what they need to work on doing better and they can get
a chance to improve their life skill average in the next semester!
