Azure Deploying Workloads
Azure Deploying Workloads
In order to gain advantage in today’s global environment, IT departments have to enable their
teams to increase innovation while reducing costs, and to create flexible environments (to scale
up and down). IT suppliers must provide their clients the tools necessary to meet increasingly
global customer needs. To fulfill these goals, many users are moving their workloads to the
cloud, while trying to figure out how to minimize the tumult, and the downtime. Moving their
open source workloads to Microsoft Azure - the clients will get a broad set of benefits - and in
this article we will present some of them.
Advantages of the Azure Cloud
Flexibility. Azure Cloud offers multiple choices for the companies and by these choices -
they can maximize their current investments. Microsoft provides support for different
platforms: IaaS (infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as a container), Linux, Java and
several Web application platforms. The clients can develop and test their Linux and open-
source components in Azure. The clients can use the tools they prefer, can apply their
current skills and run virtually any application, using their data source, with their own
operating system, on their device.
Easy infrastructure management. IT departments that have to manage the infrastructure,
need to develop solutions that fit their unique, emerging needs. They also need to ensure
their teams can get started quickly with their existing investments and skills. Azure provides
great flexibility for the teams in managing infrastructure, solid portability and different
payment schemes. By applying a hybrid solution, you can structure your workloads in order
to increase the effectiveness and productivity, keeping some on-premises and moving others
to the cloud. You can choose a Linux, or mixed Linux and Windows environment, so you
can manage your platforms with skills you already possess. For example, you can use
‘command line interface’ to manage your infrastructure in Azure, on the same way you do in
the current Linux environment. And because Azure is provider for different Linux
distributions, moving your Linux licences to Azure is simple.
Integrated support for truly open source deployments. Some events disturb the IT managers
more than working with multiple vendors, such as urgent support issues, and trying to
resolve them within reasonable timescale and effort. When you deploy open source
workloads on Azure, you can avoid this frustration, because Linux clients get fully
integrated support with co-located Linux experts - together with Microsoft engineers and
support teams.
Microsoft, together with some Linux distributors has designed a common Ticket exchange
program that offers a joint workflow and brings combined support by mixed teams of
engineers across 18 regions - to provide stable and effective resolution. Another advantage is
that Azure is a really open source environment, so you get complete support with
interoperability across different set of open source tools, frameworks, and services. Azure
Marketplace is a single needed resource that helps your team to develop state-of-the-art
products that will advance your business and satisfy clients.
Increased security for the online premises. Today, there are numerous cases of different
security breaches that offend networks and keep IT admins on a constant alert. In order to
improve the security of their companies, many IT professionals choose open source
platforms (Linux) for its high-grade security capabilities. Linux usage on Azure combines its
own security features with the security of Azure, providing consent coverage and more
certifications than any other cloud provider, with security and privacy built in.
Linux on Azure also offers: encrypted links and operations processes, using standardized
transport protocols; network infrastructure to securely connect virtual machines between
each other, and to connect on-premises datacenters with Azure VMs; advanced threat
management, offering Microsoft anti-malware for cloud services and virtual machines,
intrusion protection, DOS attack prevention, and regular penetration testing.
Cost benefits
The Linux/ Azure open-source combination will provide you flexible pricing options. You can
move to the cloud at your pace and choose a pricing model that is suitable for you. Regarding
payment models, you can choose from: ‘pay as you go’, or ‘bring your own subscription’
options. For development and testing, you can provision and abandon short-lived Linux virtual
machines and pay by the minute – only for what you use.
According to InfoWorld’s analysis (November, 2017) - Azure is with the lowest on-demand and
discounted instance pricing among all Cloud providers. With the Azure Compute pre-purchase
plan, if you have constant, permanent workloads with known compute needs, you can pre-
purchase Azure compute capacity with discounts of up to 56 per cent. Almost all Linux
distributions are free, and for the cost of Red Hat licenses - with Azure Marketplace, you’ll pay
only what you used.
