MODULE-I
1. a) Prove that the curvature of beam ‘R’ is directly proportional
bending moment ‘M’ and inversely proportional to flexural
rigidity ‘EI’ 6
b) Determine the second moment of area of a I section, refer fig.1 6

2. a) Derive the equation for direct stress distribution due to bending 6
b) Determine the deflection curve and the mid span deflection of
the simply supported beam shown in figure 2. The beam has a
doubly symmetrical cross-section 6

MODULE-II
3. a) Derive the second moment of area of an inclined thin section
refer figure.3 6

b) Write the equation for shear of closed section beams and


explain the application of closed section beams in an aircraft
structure 6

4. a) Define shear centre and explain the procedure for calculation of
shear centre for a open section beam 4
b) Calculate the position of the shear centre of the thin-walled
channel section shown in Fig.4. The thickness t of the walls is
constant 8

5. a) Derive the expression for wraping of an open section beam 6
b) Derive the Bredt-Batho formula for single cell thin walled closed
section beams subjected to torsion 6

6. a) How to calculate the shear center for a closed section 4
b) Determine the maximum shear stress in the beam section shown
in Figure.5 stating clearly the point at which it occurs. Determine
also the rate of twist of the beam section if the shear modulus G
is 25000N/mm2 8

MODULE-IV

7. a) Explain briefly the purpose of idealization. What is boom area? 4


b) Part of a wing section is in the form of the two-cell box shown
in Fig.6 in which the vertical spars are connected to the wing
skin through angle sections all having a cross sectional area of
300mm2. Idealize the section into an arrangement of direct stress
carrying booms and shear stress only carrying panels suitable for
resisting bending moments in a vertical plane. Position the booms
at the spar/skin junctions 8

8. a) Explain in detail about the flight envelop with neat sketch 4
b) Calculate the shear stress distribution in the walls of the
three-cell wing section shown in Fig.7, when it is subjected
to an anticlockwise torque of 11.3 kN m
