Solution Preparation

This document provides procedures for testing alkali tankers and solutions preparations. It describes testing the purity of sodium hydroxide in alkali tankers by titrating samples against 0.1 N potassium hydrogen phthalate. It also provides methods for determining the acidity of oils and preparing various reagents and buffer solutions commonly used in chemical testing laboratories. These include solutions for testing phosphorus and nitrogen values, silica, water quality parameters, and reagents for titrations.

Alkali Tanker Testing

Reagents:-
1) Phenolphthalein indicator
2) 0.1 N Pot. Hydrogen Phthalate.
3) Sample
Procedure:-

Weigh accurately about 10-12 gms of sample in dry dish. Transfer the
sample to 1000 ml. volumetric flask. Make the volume up to the mark by D.M.
Water.
Take accurately 10 ml. Of above soln. in conical flask. Titrate against 0.1 N
Pot. Hydrogen phthalate using Phenolphthein indicator.

(Note: - Take two samples from bottom and top of the tanker after recirculation of
Alkali)

Calculation:-

Alkali = Acid

N1V1 = N2V2.
N1 x X = 0.1 x 10

-: ACIDITY OF OIL :-

Procedure:- Blank reading:

50 ml boiled water + 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator. Then Titrate it

against 0.01 N KOH till up to pink colour developed (end point).
Then take 10 gms of Oil sample in 100 ml of conical flask & add to it 50 ml
of boiled water. Shake the sample & separate water layer by using separating
funnel. Titrate this not water with 0.01 N KOH, using phenolphthalein as a
indicator, till pink colour obtained.
