FINAL EXAMINATION

in
FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION

Answer the following questions briefly.

1. How would you relate the Historical Foundation of education to our present
educational system?
Ans:
History of Education will help you to understand how the past events shaped
the present education systems, theories and related phenomenon in the area of
teacher education in particular and education in general. Secondly, it will enable
you to appreciate the importance of education to mankind since time immemorial
across the generations. By doing so, you will be able to critically examine the
fundamental part which education plays in the transformation of society. Note that
as a teacher, you are a change agent so learning the history of education will
prepare teachers in training to examine present trends and dynamics in education,
draw practical lessons from the past, avoid possible mistakes, and initiate more
viable plans for the benefit of Society.
The teaching and learning of History of Education in Philippines is therefore
justified for many reasons, some of these include the fact that it would enable
teachers in training to have adequate knowledge of; what our educational policies
are and what they are not; the philosophical ideas guiding the Filipinos education;
the contributions of the traditional teaching and late scholars to the development
of the country’s education and the major trends in the development of our
education in Philippines which may encourage them to be willing to contribute
their own share to the development of education in the country whenever they are
in the position to do so.

2. In the Philosophical Foundation of Education, cite one important philosophy which

serves as your basis in teaching. Relate this in your actual teaching job.
The Foundation of Education entails myriads of enriched and brilliant
philosophies, but I believe that the most life-changing philosophy I acquired and I
still apply up until now lies with the ideology of this philosophy which states that,
“The heart of education is the education of the heart.” One cannot completely
comprehend the meaning of this philosophy without acknowledging the importance
character building of children in our society. This philosophy holds the creed that
intellect cannot fully suffice the holistic development of a person, making character
or attitude the biggest factor that is needed to be developed in a child. This
philosophy also supports the cliché “Brain is useless without manners.” I think that
if this philosophy will be practiced by many, we will be producing a more
respectful, God-fearing, passionate, nationalistic, and compassionate generation.

3. Discuss on how the following Psychological parameters affect pupils’ academic

performance:

3.1 reinforcement and reward

3.2 conditioning reflexes
3.3 motivation
4. In the Anthropological Foundation of Education, discuss the roles of culture relative
to teaching and learning.
When a child born in society, he becomes the part of our society. Culture is the
main aspect of any society that teaches to live with a mutual corporation with each
other. Culture is the social behavior of any society which has their own trends and
values. Every society has its own way of living life and lifestyle. Culture focus on
the knowledge of ethics, norms, traditions etc. The success of any culture is based
on modern inventions of the society. It plays a very important role in the
development of the culture; both inter connected with each other. Education
teaches about the social and cultural values.

Education helps in the establishment of the schools, colleges, and universities.

Education prepares the students for deals with cultural ethics and norms. There
are many institutes, which are focusing on culture development of education.
Various elements of culture help the individual in adopting natural and social
environment in a positive way. Each person of the society has his or her own
behavior attitude qualities and mentality to perceive the world around. Education
changes the perspective of the individual toward different modes of community.

5. Based on your experience, what are the challenging issues that you encounter in
relation to learner’s attitude in the classroom, cite situations and what actions
have you considered.
From my 3-year experience in teaching, I have come up to a realization that
the culprit of my learners’ attitudes is not only contributed by the background and
upbringing of their family and their environment. As 21st century begun to rise, the
advent of technology has also started to emerge giving us a lot of choices in the
use of media or social media. I think that there is a significant misconception and
the true classroom dilemma that fires up classroom and learning issue starts at
the very point that we use our media.

For an instance where a teacher is actively discussing a topic and s/he saw a
student not giving an interest on his discussion but instead using his/her phone.
This is a very common setting inside a 21st century class, now the action that I
usually consider doing is being done through staged process. First, I will reprimand
the user. Second, if the user tries to sneak out again, I will now be confiscating
her phone temporarily. Third, the user’s parents will be called for a meeting.
