Abstract:

Recreation is the things which we are doing for the refreshment of our mind. These
recreations are changing day by day. In this assignment I will try to show the
recreations of our 3 generations. I will show the recreation of our grandparents
time, our parents time and in our time and the recreations of present time.

The recreations of our grandparents time and our parents time were almost same.
They found their recreation in the physical works and sports. At our parents time,
some new technologies were came such as radios, black white televisions. Though
the recreations of our parents time were almost same as our grandparents time,
They also found their recreations in these technologies. In our time we found our
recreations both in technology and physical sports. But at present everyone found
their recreations in the technologies. Our grandparents and parents spent a lot of
time with their friends. And our parents time, when they had money they used to
go to the cinema on weekend. But at present, we hardly ever go to the cinema,
because we are used to downloading the new films we want to see from the
Internet. So recreation was changed, is changing and it will be changing.

People have to work for their livelihood. But men cannot work all the time. So they need leisure
period . In this leisure period, recreation is very necessary for the refreshment of mind of them.
From the very beginning, people works as well as perform recreational activities. But these
recreational activities were not always been the same. Recreational activities are changing day by
day. Recreation from one generation to another is different from the other.

What Is Recreation?

 According to Oxford Dictionary , “ Recreation is the activity done for enjoyment when
one is not working.”

 According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “ Recreation is the refreshment of strength

So we can say that recreation is the act of refreshment of the mind. Recreation is also an activity
of leisure. In our leisure period, we can do many things for the refreshment of our mind such as
we watch movie, hear songs or playing something etc. These activities are the recreational
activities.
Recreation of 3 Generations:

I will talk about the recreational activities of three generations in Bangladesh perspective. I
divided these three generations for my assignment. I will show the recreational activities of these
three generations time. These three generations are:

 Our Grandparents Time

The recreational activities of these three generations are the same or it is different from one
generation to other. Let’s see:
i. Recreation of Grandparents Time:
People who were born in 1940 – 1950, they are our grandparents. At their time they often
try to find their recreation in their work. At their time, there had not any technology. So
they found their recreation in physical work or physical sports.

They were playing and watching the kabadi, Boli khela etc. And from these physical
sports they got the recreation. At their time, there had not many Cinema Hall. Also very
few movies were made. So the people arranged Jatra-Pala and by watching the Jatra-Pala,
they got the recreation. In their time, at the weekend night people were gathering in a
place and they arranged or some of them performed The Pala gan, Puthi path etc. In this
Pala gan or Puthi path, they sung the image of their lifestyle, culture and the stories of the
ancient time. At That time, there were Gramophones in the rich peoples house or
landlords house. Sometimes, the poor people went there and heard the songs from the
Gramophones but the rich people could hear heard the songs anytime from
Gramophones. So the poor people arranged meetings of them and they were singing the
songs among themselves. Thus they found their recreation. These were the recreational
activities of our grandparents time. We can see that they found their recreation from the
natural things. There had a very few technology at their time so technology based
recreation were not seen at that time.
ii. Recreation of our Parents Time:
People who were born in 1970-1980, they are our parents. In their time there had some
technology. Also they physical recreational activities were also seen in their time. So they
found their recreations from physical sports and also got recreation from the some
technology.

This photo collage shows the recreational activities of our parents time. They played
Football, Danguli etc. for their recreation. They were swimming in the river , they
watched Bioscope. Cinema halls were very popular at that time. So when the new
arrived, people went to the cinema halls and watched movie. Jatra-Pala, Pala gan, Puthi
Path also performed at that time. They listened the news, songs from the Radio in a
group. For the technological advancement, few black white Televisions were seen to the
rich people house in the town. Our parents had TV but there was only a channel and with
few programs, so they spent their time with family or friends. Women were sewing the
Nakshi Katha in their leisure period. Thus, the people of our parents time found their
recreation. We can see that some recreation of our grandparents time were also seen in
the parents time and some new recreation came at that time.
 iii. Recreation of Our Time:
We means, people who were born after 1998. We divided this generation into two parts:
a) Who were born in and after 1998 to in and before 2010
b) Who born after 2010

Let’s see the recreations of our time (who were born in and after 1998 to in and after 2010):

a) Recreation of our Time (1998 – 2010) :

At that time, we found our recreations both in physical sports and in technological things.

We played cricket, football. For technological advancement, remote control Cars, Computers, 2G
mobile phones were available at that time. We played with the remote control car, we played
games in the computer, and also we played the games of the 2G mobile. Electricity and Color
Television were available both urban and maximum rural area. We watched the cartoon named
Tom & Terry, Mina & Raju and also watched the Alif Laila in the TV. There was electricity with
huge load shedding. So whenever electricity was gone, we would be happy because we did not
need to study then. Thus we found our recreation at that time. We got the recreations from the
both technologies and physical sports.
b) Recreation Of Present Time (after 2010):

Recreations of present time are fully depended on the technology. Without technologies, we
cannot think a moment let alone recreations. People of all ages in this time find their
recreations in the technologies. For the advancement of technologies, Smart Phone, Tablet,
Laptop everything are coming to us. So now we are fully technology based. No physical
sports are played in this time for recreation.

Maximum parents both are doing the job now. They cannot give proper time to the children.
So they give the smart phone, tablet, laptop to their children. Thus the children are been the
fully technological depended. They played video games, watches YouTube and thus they get
their recreation. Nowadays, teenagers are only worried in playing with computer games.
These games are addicted and very expensive and they are bad for their mind because some
teenagers usually think the real world is like these games. Before of this present time, which
games were played in physically, these games are now playing in the smart phone as video
games. LED TV, social media such as facebook, twitter, instagram are the recreational things
at this time. Which movies were watched in the cinema halls, now these are watching in the
online from the mobile, laptop. Thus we can see that this time is fully depended on
technologies. No physical sports are seen in this time.
Causes behind the change of Recreations:

We can see that the recreations of these three generations are not same.

If we see an example, we can see that in our grandparents time they listened the songs in the
Gramophones and listened from the singer in a group. But in our parents time they listened the
songs from radios, black white television and also from the singer in a group. If we look in our
time we heard the songs in the MP3 and Color Television. But At present everyone hear the
songs from the online such as YouTube. So recreation is not a thing which be stabilized all the
time. It is changing day by day and recreation is going to the technology based from the physical
works and sports. Why this recreation is changing? If we want to find the answer of this question
we can able to see some causes behind the change of recreations. These are:

 Technological Advancement: New technologies came and people used to use these
technologies. And people found their recreations on these technologies.
 Economical Development: Total earning of the people are increasing day by day. So
they want to enjoy the modern things. Thus recreational activities are changed.
 Urbanization: New urban area is establishing day by day. So lack of playground, people
changed their recreations.
 Imitativeness: We are liked to imitate the western culture. So we imitate their culture,
their foods even the recreational activities. Thus the recreations of ours are changing.

Conclusion:
Recreations of these three generations are different and it has both advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, recreational activities in the grandparents and parents time were cheap but there
were few ones. In our time, recreational activities were both physical and technology based. On
the other hand, nowadays there are a lot of activities but nearly all need from the technology.
Probably in the future there will be other ways of the recreations.
