The document is a review of an article about the 21st U.N. Climate Summit. The summit brought a 27-page draft agreement but failed to offer a real solution to climate change due to differing ideas among heads of state. Wealthy nations showed inflexibility while developing countries argued for climate justice and fair deals. In the end, the extra day of talks did not solve the problem and the draft is seen as a setup for future plans rather than a resolution.

ARTICLE REVIEW FORM

Name : Azhar Aditya Rahman

Student Number : 1506675756

Faculty & Class : Faculty of Engineering, MPK-B.Inggris 18 (S.204)

1. Title of the Article : Solving climate change: All in a day's work?

2. Authors : Julia Kingsley and Jon Healey

3. Explain in two or three sentences why you have chosen this article.

Climate change is one of the biggest issues the modern world is facing. The way
governments addresses this problem will affect mankind on almost every aspect. As
an engineering student and believer of climate change, I would like to know even
more on how governments from different nations propose and discuss solutions for
this problem on the 21st U.N. Climate Summit.

4. Explain briefly in six to ten sentences what the article is about.

The article discusses about the recent 21st U.N. Climate Summit in Copenhagen and
the result it brought. The result is summarized in a 27-page draft. But the draft,
unfortunately, is not offering a cure for the climate change. This is caused by the huge
number of different ideas and plans from the heads of states. India’s minister believes
that one of the problems is because wealthy nations show inflexibility in the talks. He
also thinks that the talk is more focused on defining the responsibilities of countries in
different stages of economic development than figuring out the solution itself. The
other cause of the problem is the form of climate justice for developed and developing
countries. Rich countries have responsibilities to ensure a fair global deal while
poorer countries must not settle for anything less. But some people argue that climate
change is just an effort by the developing countries to redistribute wealth from
world’s leading economies. Robert Owens of Red State states that carbon tax, which
is a point proposed in the summit, is meant to penalize the west for creating a modern
world and transfer the money to third world tyrants. In the end, the extra day in the
summit will not be the final answer for the problem and the 27-page draft is more
likely to a set up for incoming plan than resolution.
5. What is the writer’s message or purpose in writing this article?

The writers want to share about the result of U.N. Climate Summit which sadly has
not provide a real solution, so the readers can have an insight of the results and the
causes of why a solution is not achieved.

6. Give your personal comment on the article as a conclusion of your article review.

In my opinion, the 21st U.N. Climate Summit is not providing a good answer for the
climate change problem. The participating nations still show arrogance and
unwillingness to compromise and find a good solution. I also think that the nations
still do not completely understand the huge danger climate change possess. In that
case, I believe that the nations should unite and be less arrogant on dealing this
problem. Moreover, this huge problem can and will affect every living thing in this
planet. Therefore, the people who think that climate change problem is not a big deal
should be educated about the danger it can deliver to humans. In the end, I can say
that the participating nations in the U.N. Climate Summit should prioritize on finding
the best solutions for this problem.
