Math10 q2

Item analysis is a process used to evaluate test questions and improve assessments. It involves analyzing student responses to determine if questions are functioning as intended, identify areas of difficulty, and suggest teaching improvements. The procedure involves scoring tests, sorting by performance, identifying high- and low-scoring groups, recording response frequencies, and calculating item difficulty and discrimination. The results of an item analysis on a math test identified questions that were easy, average, or difficult; questions that effectively discriminated between higher- and lower-performing students; and suggestions to retain, revise, or replace questions.

Item Analysis

Definition
Item Analysis is the process of collecting, summarizing and using information from students’ responses to
make decision about each assessment task.

Use
1. Determining whether an item functions as intended.
2. Providing feedback to the teacher about student difficulties.
3. Suggesting areas for teaching improvement.
4. Suggesting areas for teaching improvement.
5. Revising the assessment task.
6. Improving item writing skills.

Procedure of Item Analysis of Selected Response Tests (SRT)

1.       Score each test.
2.       Sort the papers in numerical order according to the total score, highest to lowest.

3. Determine the upper 27 % and the lower 27 % groups. “Maximally reliable item discrimination results
will be obtained when each criterion group contains 27% of the total.”(Kelly, 1939). 25-33% reasonable size
for the criterion group. The high and low groups must contain the same number of individuals
4.       Record separately the number of times each alternative was selected by individuals in the high and low
groups.
5.       Encode the results in the template.

Item difficulty p is the percent of the group tested that answered the question correctly.

Item discrimination refers to how well the item distinguishes the more knowledgeable from the less
knowledgeable students.
