Tips and Tricks

The document provides tips for using several basic tools in SketchUp. It describes how the selection tool can be clicked, double clicked, or triple clicked to select surfaces, edges, or connected components. It also outlines how the axis tool and arrow keys can lock movement to the x, y, and z axes. The move tool allows moving and copying objects, and entering modifiers like "x" or "/" followed by a number to array or distribute copies. Similarly, the square and rotated square tools can create locked aspect ratio shapes using shift, and the arc tools create curves. The push/pull tool extrudes faces and ctrl allows splitting objects.

*This can used in almost all commands and movements in sketchup to lock the axis/plane direction.

 Blue / Z Axis – Up arrow key

 Green / Y Axis – Left arrow key

 Red / X Axis – Right arrow key

Move Tool:

Move – default hotkey M

Note:

 Use arrow keys to lock the axis/direction of the object being moved (eg. Press the up
arrow (blue axis) to lock the object upward.)

M + CTRL– Move Copy/Array Tool (CTRL can be used in a lot of the default tools)

Modifiers:

After initial move you can input commands for additional functions:

- X(number) (eg. X2, x10, x25…) Arrays the object (number) of times

Note: commands used: M>CTRL>right arrow key(red axis)>input distance 5>modifier x2

- /(number) (eg. /10, /23, /3….) Distributes the object equally a (number) of times from the
origin to the ending point

Note: commands used: M>CTRL>right arrow key(red axis)>input distance 20>modifier /3

Square/Rectangle – default hotkey R

Note:

 Use arrow keys to lock the plane of the sqaure/rectangle (eg. Press the up arrow (blue
axis) to lock to the blue plane)

Modifiers:

- CTRL – creates the rectangle using the center as reference point.

- SHIFT – locks the aspect ratio of the rectangle as a square or use the golden section.
