Design Brief
INTRODUCTION:
Watch this video and discover how everyday materials can be improved for different purposes.
Regular glass was made stronger by changing parts of it and adding other parts to it. Other materials can be changed and improved if you add other materials to it.
BRIEF:
A truck has to cross a 20cm gap to get its cargo from one side of the road to the other so it can make its delivery on time. Your task is to make a bridge that will hold as much weight as possible
so the truck can drive over the gap safely. Try and combine the materials in front of you to create a bridge that is strong enough for the trucks safe passage.
GENERATING DESIGNS:
- Line the materials up from strongest to weakest and figure out which ones you will use.
- Discuss if different materials can be used for different parts of the bridge due to their properties.
- Draw what you think your bridge will look like and the different materials you are using.
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS:
- Only use the materials provided; toothpicks, popsicle sticks, paper, blue tack, sticky tape, straws and pipe cleaners.
- The bridge must cover the a 20cm gap from one surface to another, i.e. tables.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
- Plan the bridge in your books by writing down the materials you’re going to use and drawing a design.
- Build the bridge using the materials until you think it will be as strong as possible.
EVALUATION:
- Test the strength of the bridge by adding the weigh blocks one at a time.
- Record how many weight blocks are added before the bridge collapses.
PRESENTATION:
- Take a photo of your bridge before you add the blocks and film the weight being applied to watch it collapse.
- Put the photo in a Pic Collage with the list of materials that were used for the bridge.
