Problem III
(a) Prove the product rule for differentiation of y(t) = u(t)v(t)
y ′ = (uv)′ = uv ′ + vu′
and use this to obtain the formula for integration by parts.
(b) Use this result to solve the following integral problem:

0 dt
Be sure to state the region of convergence (ROC).
Problem IV
(a) For each of the following Differential Equations, answer the following questions:
• Is this an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) or a Partial Differential Equation (PDE).
Explain with sufficient detail to indicate your understanding of the terms ODE and PDE.
• Is this a homogenous or non-homogeneous differential equation? Explain with sufficient
detail to indicate your understanding of the concept of homogeneity as applied to differ-
ential equations.
• Is this Linear or Non-Linear differential equation? Explain with sufficient detail to indi-
cate your understanding of the concept of linearity as applied to differential equations.
• What is the order of the differential equation? Explain with sufficient detail to indicate
your understanding of the concept of order as applied to differential equations.

2 f (x,y)
(iii) 2 ∂ ∂x∂y + 3 ∂f∂y
(x,y)
= g(x, y)
Problem V
(a) For the 1st Order, homogeneous, linear ODE:
dy(t)
+ ay(t) = 0
dt
(i) Find a general solution. Explain why the constant of integration must appear as a
multiplicative constant rather than an additive constant.
(ii) Find a particular solution using the initial condition y(0)=1 at t=0.
(iii) Sketch y(t) obtain from the steps above for a=1 and a=-1.
(iv) Discuss applications of this ODE in modeling population growth and radioactive decay.
