Assignment 1 Engineering Maths

This document outlines 5 problems for a math assignment on calculus concepts: 1) Deriving derivatives of various functions like polynomials, trig functions, exponentials, and logarithms. 2) Using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to find integrals of those same functions. 3) Proving the product rule and using it to derive the integration by parts formula. 4) Analyzing ordinary and partial differential equations based on order, homogeneity, linearity. 5) Solving a first order homogeneous linear ODE, finding general and particular solutions, and discussing applications.

(ii) y(t) = cos t
(iii) y(t) = sin t
(iv) y(t) = tan t
(v) y(t) = et
(vi) y(t) = ln t

0 dt
Be sure to state the region of convergence (ROC).
Problem IV
(a) For each of the following Differential Equations, answer the following questions:
• Is this an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) or a Partial Differential Equation (PDE).
Explain with sufficient detail to indicate your understanding of the terms ODE and PDE.
• Is this a homogenous or non-homogeneous differential equation? Explain with sufficient
detail to indicate your understanding of the concept of homogeneity as applied to differ-
ential equations.
• Is this Linear or Non-Linear differential equation? Explain with sufficient detail to indi-
cate your understanding of the concept of linearity as applied to differential equations.
• What is the order of the differential equation? Explain with sufficient detail to indicate
your understanding of the concept of order as applied to differential equations.

Problem V
(a) For the 1st Order, homogeneous, linear ODE:

dy(t)
+ ay(t) = 0

(i) Find a general solution. Explain why the constant of integration must appear as a
multiplicative constant rather than an additive constant.
(ii) Find a particular solution using the initial condition y(0)=1 at t=0.
(iii) Sketch y(t) obtain from the steps above for a=1 and a=-1.
(iv) Discuss applications of this ODE in modeling population growth and radioactive decay.
