JM Globaldemography

Demography is the study of human populations, their size, composition, and distribution across space. Populations change through births, deaths, and migration. There are two main types of demography: static demography studies population structure and environment, while dynamic demography examines how mortality, fertility, and migration patterns change communities over time. Key global demographic trends and patterns include birth and death rates, total fertility rates, life expectancy, age distribution of working populations, and proportions of non-working populations.

The Global Demography

Demography is the study of human populations – their size, composition and distribution across
space – and the process through which populations change. Births, deaths and migration are
the ‘big three’ of demography, jointly producing population stability or change.

Types of Demography:
 Static Demography- It means the study of anatomy or structure of community and their
environment in the given population
 Dynamic Demography- It deals with the Physiology or Functions of communities as
regards changing pattern of mortality, fertility, and migration.

Global Demographic Trends and Patterns

 Birth Rate- Number of births, the number of live births per thousand of population per
year.
 Death Rate- the ratio of deaths to the population of a particular area or during a
particular period of time, usually calculated as the number of deaths per one thousand
people per year.

Crude birth and death rates

One of the simplest ways to consider population growth is through crude birth and death rates.
These are the number of births and deaths per 1 000 people.

Total fertility rate

Refers to total number of children born or likely to be born to a woman in her life time if she
were subject to the prevailing rate of age-specific fertility in the population.
Life expectancy and longevity
Expectation of life at birth for both sexes combined (years)

Age distribution: working-age population

The working age population is defined as those aged 15 to 64. The basic indicator for employment is
the proportion of the working age population aged 15-64 who are employed
 Non-working age: 0–14 and 65+
